where can i download iphoto 9.6.1?

After trying Photos, I found too many missing features, so tried to go back to iPhoto, only to discover I couldn't!

I've also searched for the Photo 9.6.1 update, but it seems to have been removed from the App Store. I've made an appointment to talk with Apple tomorrow to ask them what's going on.

I found you can still run iPhoto by opening the package contents with Control-click on the App, then click on Show Package Contents, Contents, MacOS, iPhoto. But I don't know how stable this is. It seems to run just fine. But I'd like the 9.6.1 update just to be sure it's not going to trash my photos.

writedeb, and all others looking for this update. It is no longer in the App Store to download - but if you already have iPhoto installed on your computer, you can still get it. Here's how:

1) Go to the App Store (Apple Menu in upper left hand of your screen).

2) When the App Store is open, click on Purchases. iPhoto should be in your list. Click on Update (or Install).

3) A progress bar should open up, and the update should download and install.

4) If this does not happen, then do the following. Go to System Preferences.

5) Click on Users & Groups

6) Click the lock to make changes. Enter your password.

7) Click the + sign to add a user. Check "Allow user to administer this computer". Give the new user a password you'll remember (write it down)

8) Restart your machine, and log into the new user.

9) Repeat steps 1) and 2). This time iPhoto should download and install.

10) Once it's installed, log out of your new user and log into your regular user and make sure iPhoto now works.

11) If this did not work, make an appointment with the Apple Store to talk with them either in person or by phone.

I was astounded when iphoto was disabled. Apple site on 2015-04-09 mentioned continued availability. However I never received notice to upgrade to 9.6.1 before hand.

I followed Terrell's directions and they worked flawlessly. I did need to create a new administrator account.

I can now use my iphoto as an organizer as before until I decide on a new routine. (iPhoto was always poor at adjustments and I use PS Elements)

Sadly, neither of Terrell's suggestions worked for me. It pulled up the some photos on the "new" account, but only the last month, and still nothing my main account.

Is there anywhere to get a legitimate update of some sort for iPhoto so I can get back to my photos after this Yosemite update? If only one update would go smoothly!

Very helpful. Needed to do the 'add new user' but then worked fine.

I do like Apple and have used for very many years and many machines/systems. However sometimes they do annoy like this. Update the system and iPhoto stops working! I was only one level back - 9.6 - and without any warning messages from Apple they try to force the new photos app on me.... and then no way of directly updating from Apple website. Time wasted 'googling' to find the solution.

Photos is fine in iPad/iPhone but with a large library in iPhoto (47GB) I would find Photos totally inadequate to sort my pics. No doubt in due course they will force me to stop using iPhoto and I shall have to find and learn a totally new photo software.

I was able with Terrell's suggestion, recover iPhoto and install 9.6.1

I do however use Aperture also and it is now past tense. All programs are heading toward the IOS users and not those that are serious photographers.

All major editing I do is done in PS Elements, and saved as a Photoshop file outside of any Apple editing / organizing program. Aperture continues to crash often, iPhoto is a horrible editor and I am not interested in learning Photos.

iPhoto allows me to order our family calendars with birthdays from iCal. If I could find another way to do this without retyoing all of the items, iPhoto would be terminated at once.

Looks like Lightroom is in my future. That will not be a bad thing.

Did you have your photos stored on iCloud, or on your machine, Franimal?

Once you have downloaded and installed the iPhoto update using the new user (make sure this user has admin privileges!) then log out of the new account and into your normal account. Your pictures should be where you left them. You might need to log into iCloud again. To do this, go to iPhoto preferences, click on iCloud, and make sure the first three things are checked. You will also need to enter your iTunes (iCloud) login.

Yes, it seems Apple is loosing interest in the more pro side of things, and aiming more at the general public. The dumbing down of applications so they run on iPad and iPhone is understandable for the majority of people. But for more pro use, it's sad to lose the functionality and features of iPhoto, FinalCut, and other fine programs.

Haha! When I see my friends struggle with MS, there is no comparison to Apple products.

This did not work for me - have never purchased iPhoto it has always been part of whatever system kit I got...so not in PURCHASED for me. Installed version is 9.4.3.

Any other options - I stupidly went to Yosemite before considering my photos. I have one huge iPhoto library on my home server not on the cloud. When I launch the import function in Photos.app it gets to 1-8% and sticks even when running for hours.

It appears I need a working version to pull this off.

1. Where can I download iPhoto 9.6.1?

2. Strategy-wise is it better plan to save all as smaller chunks (maybe by year) and manage the multiple libraries? Was thinking I could keep current year in iCloud if smaller.

3. Better tool to import existing 9.4.3 library to Photos.app?

If there is no Apple Store near you, make a phone appointment with them. It's a new service, been running only about a year and a half.

Use this instead of trying to wade through the people posting insults to the helpful, experienced posters and the other million people who only whine about hating the same thing as the intial poster...

Thank you very much to those who had great advice and wonderful alternatives.

Again, this helped my situation of having downloaded Yosemite without knowing that it would replace my iPhoto app with Photos app. Then, when I wanted to get back to iPhoto I discovered that my last version updated was one behind the current and it would not upload or work at all— was greyed out in my apps folder, and purchases only showed a non-working update, not an install option. My iPhoto library had been migrated to Photos library.

I followed these instructions in the link here, and it took hardly any time to replace my iPhoto app with a working one that imported my library and now I have access to all my photos, albums, and catalogued events exactly the way they were prior to my blind Yosemite download.

All is good here, but I am still looking into getting Lightroom...

(Opening a new account, and downloading iPhoto under my new account).

Be sure to go back to your old, original account, so you don't wind up with different versions of photos scattered around.

Once you see everything is working, then you can delete the new account.
