Photos library won't upload

I have been hoping for an "iPhoto" in the cloud for years, so I am excited about Photos. So, I upgraded my library without any trouble, but my library won't upload to the cloud. It seems to be stuck. If I go on my iPad, I can see the albums have been created, and I think a very small number of photos have also. However, after 2 days, there has been no change. I have checked the settings on my iMac, and I even restarted it. When I go under preferences, then iCloud, it says it is uploading, but nothing is moving. The connection is fine.

Any ideas?

I have exactly the same problem as Hydrick above. The Photo Library updated successfully on my iMac, but won't upload to the Cloud. It says it is uploading 8,665 items, but clearly isn't. And this after 2 days. I've checked all the settings and I've also re-booted - without result. I've also tried trying to upload through iCloud.com without success. That produced an error message saying there was a problem due to a possible network problem or missing resources. Details: IS FATAL true APPLICATION NAME: photos.

There is no sign that the upload has even started at all, let alone 'started again' as suggested by Winston Churchill above. How many cases has he seen, and how long did it take before they started again?

If anyone has any further ideas it would be much appreciated.

But with respect you don't have the same problem at all, either exactly or otherwise. The OP's description clearly implies their upload has started and makes no mention of errors from iCloud.com.

I can't say for sure whether it's what will happen for the OP, but I did and still do believe it to be worth mentioning. To answer your question, I've seen dozens of cases, it seems that the time taken to restart is variable and I couldn't say with any certainty that some of these have taken more than 2 days, people tend not to respond with that sort of detail.

This has also been an issue. I've upgraded the library without problems but of the 6k photos I have the only ones that are in the iCloud are the ones taken from either my iPhone 5s or iPad which is only 2k. The Photos App for Mac states that it is uploading but there is no information being uploaded at all. I was on the beta test for 10.10.3 and I have reported this but nothing has occurred to change the fact that Photos for Mac is not uploading at all.

Just to clarify and add a little more detail.....

I am not getting any error messages. I have been trying to upload my library for 2 days. It seems to have built the albums, so I know there is some level of communication with iCloud.

I have my library on a very new 5TB hard drive with nothing else on it. That hard drive is also where my iPhoto library was and it is the location where the migration to Photos was done. Again, the library is fine on my Mac.

Since my original post this morning, it has actually moved a little. I have seen the upload progress move from approximately 43,800 photos to upload to 43,600.

Same issue here...for me it's been 3 days. I understand that my library is huge, over 48K but like for the others, it created the events on the cloud, it uploaded immediately about 335 photos, then nothing since. I restarted my MAC, checked my Internet connection and confirmed a steady 36 Mbps upload bandwidth to the states with less than 80ms latency. Because of this, my MAC has been plugged in and on for the past 36 hours. If I has seen some progress, even small, I would have assumed it is just slow and it take a couple months to upload the whole thing. However, it hasn't moved in 3 days since the initial 335 photos which were uploaded fairly quickly (about 10 minutes or so). I have seen a very large number of posts covering this same problem. I guess we just have to follow these posts until someone figures it out :-) In the meantime, if I don't see progress in the coming days, I will downgrade my iCloud storage and keep using good old fashion ext HDD backup. I had all my photos neatly organised by dates and places for years, iPhoto created a mess for me. A large library takes many days to backup, even when using carbon copy.

Same problem for me. Will be following this post and update with any info I can get from Apple. I have tried turning off/on icloud photo library on the Mac mutliple times. It seems to start, and then get stucks. Strangely, the number that it gets stuck at is different everytime, but doesn't seem to be going down. It always gets stuck over 17,000. I would be OK restarting it if the number kept going down. But it seems like it is starting from scratch each time and therefore won't ever finish no matter how many times I restart..

I have tried completely signing out of icloud and back in again, but it is still getting stuck. I had not problems adding my iphone and ipad to my icloud photo library.

I have the same exact problem. Yesterday I started the upload process for around 2K photos. There's been some progress. Especially now that it managed to upload all my iPhone 6+ photos to the iCloud photo library.

At the moment Photos for Mac is switching between inconsistent messages: "sending 2..K elements" or "adding 7XX elements". I've checked the photos in icloud.com and the numbers hasn't changed for hours now.

I still have more than 50K photos waiting to be added to Photos and sent to the iCloud P. Library.

I really don't know where all this is going, but clearly this is an unacceptable scenario from Apple. This Photos app for Mac has bugs and recurrent crashes. Why do they release such functionality where there's clearly lack of quality and infra-structure?!

I had this issue when I was using the beta... interestingly, I have Little Snitch installed and Photos was making connections to Microsoft's cloud servers... 😁

Anyway, try repairing your Photos library by quitting Photos, then relaunching and holding down ctrl, alt & cmd all together (the 3 keys to the left of your space bar), click'Repair' and see if that helps, it fixed my issue and my library uploaded successfully.

I do get the impression that there are infra issues at the Apple end. On a slightly related note, I had to do a Time Machine restore of my MacBook Pro (due to another OS X defect with FileVault), and now Photos is simply stuck on the "Updating..." message in Preferences/iCloud. It's been like that for four days now on two different iCloud accounts. My Mac Mini is fine. Is suspect it's trying to re-sync on the MacBook Pro. I also notice in the Processes that there are lots of video and photo conversion processes running and that cloudd and Photos app processes occasionally pop to the top of the CPU use list. In addition, my local Photo library is now at 175GB, whereas the iCloud library is at 135GB and my Photos/iCloud setting is set to "Optimise Storage", which clearly it is not doing.

Before repairing, I was stuck with 3,824 photos remaining to upload for the past 3 days.

After the repair, it went back to 6,319 photos remaining ... but the number is actually counting down.

Given that I do have "half fast" internet, this could take a while. (but it did decrease by 50 just in the time I've been writing this ...)

... also notable, I downloaded Little Snitch to watch as well. Thanks for that tip too!

Ok, it seems that the library repair did it. I had to do it about a dozen times though trying different combinations. Seems that the one that worked was. Mac restart, disable the antivirus, disable the WiFi connection...then start the repair. Once finished, I enabled my WiFi back and it started again. I have a very fast connection and it is uploading about 10 photos a minute. But that's ok, as long as it is going.
