Does anyone know about the feasibility with putting the photos library on a sinology NAS? I know with iPhoto there was an issue if the hard drive wasn't formatted for Mac. I've had my iPhoto library on a USB drive for years because my macbook air doesn't have enough hard drive space.

This is an excellent thread. However question: If you want to keep the advantage of the Photos-Functionalities, sync across devices etc. what options do you have if you run out of disk space?
Move the Library to an external disk formatted formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled), directly connected to your Mac via USB, Thunderbolt or similar.
Ok. Got it. Excellent. Thanks. However now I run the risk that if this external disk fails all my photos are lost. Can I also use time machine functionality to automatically back-up this external disk to yet second (different) external disk?

Yes - and, of course, there are many, many other back up utilities you can use as well.
