after 10.2 update- imported clips displaying black

I downloaded all updates for FCP, compressor, and system updates. Currently running a brand new Mac Pro, 32GB RAM, dual GPUs, the whole 9 yards. I am running my FCP library from a Caldigit 3 drive raid array, in raid 0. After updating to 10.2, all of my camera clips show only black, no video, but i have audio.

There are no warnings at all in any of my projects or events, the clips are just black, with working audio. I was successful in updating the libraries when i updated FCP to 10.2. The clips I have are recorded from a Panasonic AG-AC160, recorded AVCHD, 1080p24. Any ideas?!

I can skim through audio, and the thumbnails appear for each clip in the events browser, but when i play them, All i get is audio, with a black screen in the viewer. They were working fine yesterday, and the only thing I changed was the 10.2 update. I'm stumped!

Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), FCP 10.2

I have a few suggestions for the genius bar 😉

Thanks for sharing their suggestion, Video290, but the genius bar would realise that's a ridiculous suggestion if they had read Apple Support's official response to the issues with AVCHD footage.

Resolving Black Frames Issues with Panasonic AVCHD and Final Cut Pro X 10.2 - Apple Support

Deleting thumbnail media doesn't make a scrap of difference.

Haven't had time to read the full thread so I apologize if this has been covered... I started having issues with Panasonic AVCHD files before FCPX 10.2. For a few months, starting around the time of the Yosemite, all the clips from Panasonic AVCHD footage that I re-wrapped to MOV outside of FCPX, would not play in QuickTime. They played fine in QT7, VLC, etc. but QuickTime would show black clips with audio. Yet, once I imported them into FCPX (versions before 10.2) everything worked fine. Now at 10.2, like the rest here, nothing works short of transcoding. So, I'm not convinced this is simply an FCPX issue. Clearly something broke in 10.2, but QT couldn't play the clips for months before 10.2.

They obviously screwed something up in this update, which they appear to have admitted. If you look at "What's New in Version 10.2" they specifically list Panasonic AVC-Ultra codec family, and JVC H.264 Long GOP, which I'm guessing is the format of JVC camera that's also having the same issues.

I've been using ClipWrap to archive all my footage, and today, after updating to 10.2, it creates black clips when I rewrap them in a Final Cut X format.

Luckily for me I typically work in 1080p24 (HMC-150), but I just happened to do a shoot today for another office and they requested 1080p30. Hopefully they're not editing with FCP X 10.2, I guess. My 24p footage is working fine.

I have a group of editors working on MacBook pros...and this problem as been pervasive - black clips with audio only.

We import from P2 cards, AVC-intra 50 and see this using Yosemite and now El Capitan...on version 10.2.2 (of final cut)...but previous versions as well.

it's not all clips, all the time -but working in news and it's frustrating.

sometimes we close FCP and reopen and clips are there, but that's rare.

i have a short video I could send (had one of the photogs take a short vid)

if you're sure you're using fcpx 10.2.2, does it seem to happen with clips of a certain frame size or frame rate? if you can figure out what the black clips have in common, you should report it to apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutpro.html. and for tips about how to send good feedback, check out http://www.fcpworks.com/submitting-better-fcpx-feedback-to-apple/

Solved for me. I haven't read the entirety of this thread but had the problem when suddenly all my clips were black in both thumbnails and when played. I manage my files in an external folder and when I did a reveal in finder, it took me to the video which played fine in every other program. I fiddled around, searched online, and then did this:

File>Delete Generated Library Files... Selected everything, including optimized and proxy, deleted and BAM they all stopped being black.

I don't know if this makes my situation a special case or not, but to fill in the picture I had two libraries accessing the same externally managed folder and media. In the other library the clips were fine. Not sure if that had anything to do with the problem or not.

Hope this helps.

Same for me. Had some clips in the browser showing black, if imported in the timeline they would show black but show the audio. Though no skimming would be possible, no video no audio. Black clips seemed to be random, some from Panasonic camera, some from gopro.

I also did the following:

Select the event;

File> Delete Generated Event files ...and deleted the optimised files, and suddenly they were visible again.

Thanks Chris_f
