iPhone 6 battery life. Why is my phone dying at 20%?

iPhone 6

ios 8.3

this phone isn't that old, it shouldnt be having battery problems right?

well when my phone is around 20% it dies. Shuts off. And it doesn't go back on until I plug it in. Why does it die at 20% if its not actually dead.

ANd rand then when it does go back on, it will say 23% or something. Like the battery never even got down to 0%.

This has happened maybe 7 or 8 times.

Help.

iPhone 6, iOS 8.3

I am currently having problems with my iphone 6s shutting down at 40% and found that I am eligible for the repair discussed here: https://www.apple.com/support/iphone6s-unexpectedshutdown/

You should check yours out and see if this explains your problem.

Ok, I have determined that my particular iPhone shutdown problem with enough battery life remaining has something to do with the Health app. The first time it died with more than ample battery life, I was looking at the Health app. Just today, I was looking at the Health app and it shutdown prematurely again. Both times I had to plug it into the charger to power it back on.

I do not recall the iPhone shutting down prematurely, with ample battery life any other time, only those two times while using the Health app. Guess I won't be looking at the Health app unless I have an alternate power source.

The Health app crash also completely wiped out the Visual Voicemail system. When I restarted yesterday, the prompt kept asking for the VV password. Today it asked again. When I looked at the VV, all were gone. I restarted and input the correct password. Only 1 VV from yesterday was there. Hey, thanks for completely wiping out all the VV I've been saving from the past couple years.

Ok, it has happened again, twice in 2 days, and is pretty F annoying. I had 17% batt life remaining and was going to record a red-tailed hawk about to make a dive at some some prey. Before I knew it, it shuts down completely and displays the plug-into charger graphics. Do I have to carry a F charging wire and backup battery everywhere I go now?

Guess it's not only the Health app that makes the phone completely shutdown.

Conked out, eh? Mine has been conking out at 36% over the past few weeks. The battery life lasts about 1.5 hours before it conks out again. Every time I am about to make an important phone call, it conks out on me. What can I do? Should I take it to the store a describe the nature of the conking out? Glad to see that others are having the same coking out issue as I am.

If it isn't even a year old it's in warranty; take it to an Apple store for evaluation. The symptom of the phone dying above 1% can either be a failing battery or a battery gauge that needs to be recalibrated. To recalibrate:

  • Charge to 100%
  • Run the battery down until the phone shuts off
  • If it shuts off above 1% charge it for a minute only, then continue running the battery down. Repeat until it makes it to 1% before shutting off
  • Charge it to 100% again

You can also download the app Battery Life, which does a pretty good diagnosis of the state of the battery. Apple's test is better, however.

I agree. It's extremely annoying. Mine started this about 3 months ago (about a month before warranty ran out)- but I didn't realize it was an Apple problem and just thought I had done something wrong or it was a fluke. Now that it I happening quite often (TWICE) today!!!, it is out of the year warranty.

I'm sorry but a phone that is barry a year old should NOT be having these issues, especially an Apple phone. It's crap to tell me to pay extra to get it fixed. I love Apple. I have several products (IPod several generations, iPad, iPad mini and my home has three Apple phone- this is my 3rd in 7 years). So I have been a solid Apple consumer but this issue has me guessing what my next phone will be.
