RAW file import to Photos; OS X 10.10.3

How to import the RAW files into Photos?

Panasonic DMC-LX3. I shoot both RAW and JPG images. iPhoto would import both images for each picture, Photos just imports the JPG. I am NOT using the iCloud photo library. The picture in Photos has a small shadowed box in left bottom corner with a J in it - almost like there is a hidden file, no idea what the J means, can find no reference in help files or online.

I've tried importing direct from the memory card in iMac slot and with camera plugged into USB - no difference. Photos did pull over all the RAW files from the iPhoto library on first startup.

The LX3 is listed as supported by OS X Yosemite V10.10 OS X Yosemite: Supported digital camera RAW formats - Apple Support

Maybe the issue is that I could select Adobe Photoshop Elements as the photo editor in iPhoto preferences . Photos does not have this external editor feature.Help!

If you take your laptop to the Apple Store, Richard, and get some real answers, please let us know the outcome. I'm trying to learn more about Photos so when I help others at the senior center, I can try to explain the weird things that are happening in Photos and how to get around the quirks. We experimented with creating a Smart Folder for RAW images, only to discover that not all the RAW images were found. I realize iPhoto has been phased out and Photos is its replacement, but it would be nice if Apple had it working as well as the old app did! I also showed my student today how to organize her JPG/RAW images in Finder so she can stop relying on an Apple app that's buggy... Maybe I'll investigate Photoshop Elements Organizer as a replacement for iPhotos and Photos!?

I wish there was a way to choose to make a batch in raw, as you said.

I have an additional related problem - even though i imported a RAW image and it shows up with RAW in the info metadata box - The RAW icon does not appear on the image (in lower left) - I have all the metadata options turned on.

Is there some other place that needs to be turned on?

Can someone advise with possible solutions

Did you import only the RAW image, or did you import a JPEG+RAW pair with the same name? The "R" icon shows only when you import a pair and select "Use RAW as original" under the Image menu in Edit mode.
