how to revert back to iPhoto from photos

I allowed my mac to upgrade last night and discovered this morning that iPhoto had been replaced with "photos" which is total crap - I can't edit my photos as I want any longer - luckily I have an old mac and can use that - this is a useless change of what was a fantastic program - Apple should have left iPhoto alone and added photos for those who just want to upload and print and make calendars etc - I intend to delete it if i can

MacBook (13-inch Mid 2009), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

I called Apple you can't unless you revert to a Time Machine backup prior to the upgrade - the editing options are crap - its all about exporting photos to the cloud where they can be hacked and making postcards and calendars via Apple and generating cash for them - Luckily I have a backup and older Mac's with iPhoto - I am currently moving all my photos out of PHOTOS and deleting it from the Doc - I wont be opening or using it again.

they say you can't delete PHOTOS - I am certainly going to try.

Photos is installed as part of the operating system and it is specially protected, because other parts of the system are relying on it to be there, just like Mail, Contacts,...

You are not forced to use it, but uninstalling may result in unexpected problems. Just ignore Photos - remove Photos from your Dock and and move it to a folder for unused apps on the Launch Pad, to get it out of the way.

Since the "Upgrade" to Photos, my iPhoto.app does NOT work anymore (It has the deactivated App symbol with a circle an a bar). Any Ideas how to reactivate it?

That means, that you did not yet update iPhoto to version 9.6.1. Only that version works with MacOS X 10.10.3.

Try to update from the Purchases tab of the AppStore.

If you are seeing iPhoto on your Purchases tab at the AppStore, delete the iPhoto Application from the Applications folder. Don to empty the Trash.

Reload the Purchases tab of the AppStore by pressing ⌘R .

Now try to download and install the update..

I thought I did last week, but apparently, you are right.

Try to update from the Purchases tab of the AppStore.

Unfortunately, iPhoto does not show up there anymore. Also if I search for it, it does not.

I tried hanging in the support line for a while before the system threw me out, so I will keep on trying it myself...

Any Ideas?

Yes, I live in Spain and I too had the "The item you've requested is not currently available in the Spanish Store."

The solution was to follow the instructions above. Do NOT try to search for it in the search field top right.

Instead select the Purchases tab and you should find it there. However, before pressing the UPDATE button, go you your Applications directory and Delete the existing iPhoto App (sending it to the Trash, but do NOT empty the trash, you might want it back)

Then and only then can you press the UPDATE button.

Good luck

That's weird, because I upgraded and found Photos at the bottom of my display in place of iPhotos, but I went to Launchpad and launched iPhoto from there and it worked perfectly. I did ensure all my products were updated, and a full Time Machine backup made before I allowed the upgrade to take place.

I allowed Photos to import the iPhoto Library to create a new Photos Library, but have since deleted that and returned to using iPhoto with its own copy of that library. Naturally, make sure the iPhoto Library is there as well as the Photos Library before deleting anything.

On my iMac and MacBook, Photos and iPhoto are co-resident and work fine - well, Photos works as fine as it can, which isn't to my taste. They don't allow changes made in one version of the library automatically to be reflected in the other though (as happens with iPhoto and Aperture), so to avoid confusion, it needs to be one or the other.

I also have iDVD on my system and that still works, though Apple stamped on it long ago. It doesn't come on new machines and can't be bought now, but existing licences are honoured, at least at present. Apple may think DVDs are old hat, but our 93-year old grandmother likes to have them so she can see the great-grandchildren on their vacations.
