how to revert back to iPhoto from photos

I allowed my mac to upgrade last night and discovered this morning that iPhoto had been replaced with "photos" which is total crap - I can't edit my photos as I want any longer - luckily I have an old mac and can use that - this is a useless change of what was a fantastic program - Apple should have left iPhoto alone and added photos for those who just want to upload and print and make calendars etc - I intend to delete it if i can

I did ensure all my products were updated, and a full Time Machine backup made before I allowed the upgrade to take place.

That is what saved you. The iPhoto 9.6.1 compatibility update for MacOS X 10.10.3 was availlable for a few days before Apple pulled the iPhoto.app from the AppStore for new customers.

But iPhoto is still the better app, so why abandon it, while Photos is just the first version and needs still a bit development to show its full potential?

I also have iDVD on my system and that still works, though Apple stamped on it long ago. It doesn't come on new machines and can't be bought now, but existing licences are honoured, at least at present. Apple may think DVDs are old hat, but our 93-year old grandmother likes to have them so she can see the great-grandchildren on their vacations.

iDVD remains very popular. I use it all the time. Over 700 million DVDs were sold in 2014.

I see two ways to go back to iPhoto or any other program. Photos has an export option. Select Photos from the file menu, Then export to where ever you wish. Then import to iPhoto if you wish.

Or go to your Home folder Open the pictures folder. Right click on PhotosLibrary.photoslibrary. Select Show package contents. Open the Masters folder. There are all your pictures in folders by date. Copy them wherever you wish. Import them into iPhoto if you wish.

If you wish to start iPhoto clean backup the file iPhoto.picturelibrary and then delete it.

If you have lots of pictures I assume these procedures will take a long time.

I love my MacPro 3,1.

I am a tinkerer. I have 4 internal drives and two external drives for backup.I can boot up in OS 6.8, 8.5, 9.5 and 10.10.

MS Windows allows for much more UI customization. The problem with Apple is that they make decisions without consideration of their users. Examples:

In the name of thiness:

Except for the new MacPro you cannot change/update the HD or memory.

All HDs and DVD/cd drives must be added externally.

TRIM can only be activated with Apple SSDs in Yosemite. They don't even sell a SSD in a 2.5 inch eSADA configuration.

They keep on changing the user interface without allowing options for the old way (without keyboard keys).

In Photos events are lost. I relied on events. Importing a folder automatically created a new event with the folder name.

No import in external editor in Photos.

Loss of colorful icons in Apple Apps in the menubar and toolbars.

And of course Apple products are expensive even memory.
