Drag and drop from Photos? Nope.

I'm noticing that drag and drop from Photos to anything does not work. Its like we're going backwards in time. It seems ridiculous that we have to go through the Export function to get images out of the application. Why Apple?

You can drag to an OLD program like Fireworks.

The old programs need updating to be fully compatible with the macOS versions. Older applications have been written to use older system calls and now deprecated system libraries that are not supported in the newer system. They simply cannot interact with Photos because Photos is using new system frameworks that come with macOS 10.10.3 or newer. Since the release of Yosemite Apple introduced new security features changing the ways that applications can communicate and exchange data and media. Older apps cannot use the required protocols.

Apple didn't "brake" anything. They updated the OS. The offered new apps and these work differently. No one forced you to update the OS nor to change your apps. You could have remained with the OS and apps you had. Your real problem is that you updated without checking into the consequences of that. Take responsibility for your own actions.

This is the biggest pet peeve EVER FOR ME. I have all mac things. Mac is known for DRAGGING AND DROPPING. And honestly some of you people out there really need to chill out. This is a super huge issue for us mac people. and UPDATING A PROGRAM, is not a reason why we should LOSE THIS FEATURE.

So, complain to the writers of the various apps.

How could I know that basics OS features like drag and drop won't work after updating photos? Is that something a user expects? I don't think so. Because that never happened with any updates of OS and iphoto before.

It happened before. Every once in a while macOS gets completely redesigned and legacy code is dropped, to make the system small and fast again, adapt it to the new hardware and processors, include new security features. These major redesigned are disruptive for the compatibility with older applications, because the foundations they are built on are no longer available. And even if they still run in some way, they can no longer interact with the the new system.

It happened with the transition from Snow Leopard to Lion, when the support for PowerPC applications was dropped, colorful icons vanished, and Spotlight changed considerably. We now have a Spotlight that can direct us to the next movie theater, but is nearly useless to show us the path to a file on our Mac.

And Yosemite brought the next major redesign, with a strong focus on Cloud integration, Full Screen apps, new security features changing the interaction between applications.

If you were using all apps in Full Screen mode, like Apple expects the users to do, the missing ability to drag and drop would not matter, since there is nothing to drag to. But I never use any app this way. I want to see more than one app at once and my Desktop as well. Otherwise I could use the iPad instead.

You find out like everyone else does: don't rush to update, read the reviews. Again, take responsibility for your own actions and decisions.

Nothing like scolding a stranger for updating computer operation systems.... Very productive, Terrence. Bottom line, apple needs to offer drag and drop in the photos - i don't care when it was available, or when it ended.....doesn't matter.......Today is today. So until apple realizes how inconvenient and ridiculous this is, keep complaining everyone! 😢

Oh, so lets stop the craziness and please explain.

Here's my situation, I save photos, across all ios devices - which are synced...

I go into Photos app on my imac....... find my saved images and want to:

a. simply drag into a message to someone (imessage)

b. drag into photoshop to work on it

c. drag it into illustrator to put it into a document

d. drag it into an email..... to send off

e. hold option and add to another file somewhere.....

I know you can drag INTO photos......but I can't figure out how to drag OUT only file export if you want the original quality. My software is always up to date. Please correct me if these things are possible and I'm missing how - so far my only resort has been screen shot to desktop OR screenshot to clipboard > paste.

What a useless photo catalog app. I always thought the drag and drop copies are actual copies of the original photo. And not any reduced version. Why the heck?

You "always thought" and never noticed? You couldn't see the difference? What does that tell you? Bit like the other poster who seems to think a screen grab is a viable alternative...

You never should have gone directly into the iPhoto library and with Photos you can not for a number of reasons - the correct way is (and has always been) to use the media browser near the bottom of the open/attach/upload window - Media ==> Photos ==> Photos - (which is MUCH easier that using the finder inside the library since the Media browser organization is the same as Photos organization whereas the file organization within the library which is not designed for human access) or eto xport the photos (file menu ==> export)
