Disk Utility permissions repairs Open error 18446744073709551594: Unknown error: -22

While running a routine Disk Utility permissions repair I got a lot of errors I'd never seen before.

They ALL start off as "Open error 18446744073709551594: “Unknown error: -22” on "

and then continue with a file's path.

I've never seen anything like this before ... and there are hundreds of them.

What's happened? How can this be fixed?

I searched that list and "Open Error" - of ANY kind - is not on it.

This is NOT a message on that list.

I've been Using Apple's Disk Tools/Disk Utility since System 7, but have NEVER in 20 + years seen this type of diagnostic error before.

Could it have something to do with the fact that TechTool Pro just informed me thousands of my picture files on that drive were corrupted? Of the file paths I checked: none of these pictures seemed to be involved - but I couldn't check them ALL - just spot check them to look for patterns. I suspect apps might be corrupted ... Colibri's Icon on the dock is clearly corrupted: and replacing both the app and then its dock icon have not helped .... it is still a curious block of random colored pixels (Colibi is working FINE, though.) ... and I do not know how many days ago it changed into ... this.

(When I looked at any of those corrupted picture files with Finder they only showed a generic icon {file length and dates ware as they had been} - I suspect the resource forks have become separated from their data forks, on all these pictures, and left me with twice as many corrupted pictures as actually got mangled somehow.)

Disk Utility has several repair types

  1. Permissions repair (which is the one that creates the output that can be safely ignored).
  2. Filesystem repair (which may be the one you ran).

The second one is a concern when it finds errors, especially if it cannot repair them.

NOTE: Tools like TechTool Pro can actually create these errors if the tool was not designed for this OS version, be careful before you run every tool that it has - ensure it is up to date for the OS!

Run the repair in recovery mode to be sure the OS is not damaged & reporting the errors incorrectly.

I don't know what your apparent file corruption issue is, but that sounds like bad news - files shouldn't display random 'pixel noise errors', but that may be for many other reasons (like badly installed, misconfigured software or incompatible apps, damaged caches…).

I would suggest you make a full bootable backup of this disk in case it is failing - hardware does not last forever. I would also look for evidence of crashes. Etrecheck is an easy way to get an overview, it will list crash logs if you have recent ones.

http://etresoft.com/etrecheck Post the full report if you think there is a lot you don't understand.

Otherwise you can look at Console for the logs (inside Applications/Utilities/) but that is complex & posting the logs here can just confuse the issue (unless prompted to do so).

Ask if you need advice on how to backup - it is the only way to limit data loss on a failing disk.
