Solved it. In the Photos app, look at the sidebar (if not there, click View/Show Sidebar). Click on the group "Bursts". Right click on a set of photos and choose "Delete 1 Burst". A dialog box will appear and it says, "Delete From All Devices. Keep x favorites and delete y photos from one burst?". If you click the delete button then the "extras" will be deleted and the favorites saved.

Hi guys, I just tested and confirmed that this behavior still exists with iOS 9 & OS X El Capitan, unfortunately. If you unburst on the iPhone, you have to unburst again on the Mac 😟

I also noticed something interesting. If you import the photos using Image Capture and then import to Photos, the unbursted photos are re-grouped into a burst. However, if you import the photos directly into Photos, then the re-grouping does not happen. Not sure if this is behavior has changed in the new OS, but it appears to resolve the double-burst issue.

However, there seems to be a slight catch/quirk/bug with this method. If you import the unbursted photos directly into Photos and then delete one of the photos in the series, it creates the Burst again, but this new Burst exists independently of the other unbursted photos. If you click "Make a Selection" on the burst, you see that all the photos are selected except the one that had been deleted, but clicking "Done" seems to do nothing. However, if you then also select "Delete 1 Burst" for this new Burst, then it does actually delete the 1 photo and the new Burst, leaving the other original unbursted photos.

So, this behavior is a little odd and is something to keep in mind, but it seems like importing directly into Photos is a solution to the double-burst issue.

Here's my approach.

If you want to keep some photos in a burst set:

• select "Bursts" in sidebar;
• double click the burst set that you want to work on;
• select "Make a Selection" in the upper right hand corner of the burst set;
• select the photo or photos in the burst set that you want to keep by checking the circle on the bottom right of each photo. You will also see a blue check mark on each photo selected in the burst set at the bottom of your screen.
• click "Done" in the upper right corner of your screen.
• select "Keep Only Selection" and your selected photos will saved separately, i.e. they will no longer be in a burst set in "Bursts."

If you don't want to keep any photos in a burst set then select the burst set to be deleted go to "Image" in the menu bar and select "Delete 1 Burst."

You can also select multiple photos in the burst (click on the small circle on the lower right of each one). If you do that & then click "Done" the selected photos will be treated as individual photos, "unbursting" them, so to speak.

I have the same question and you can do the following steps to delete photos from burst:

1. select the photo you want to modify or delete in bursts folder

2. click "Make a Selection" at the top left corner of photo

3. bottom will shown those burst photos and select the one you want to keep by click the "circle" on bottom right corner (you can select more than one if you want)

4. click "Done" than you can choose the popup "Keep only selection" to delete those you didn't select.

I noticed that when keeping only 1 frame from a burst, the others were hidden and not deleted yet.

Result : when exporting the 1 picture, all the "removed" pictures of the "original" burst were exported (though it was showing as only 1 frame and not as a burst any more), which was not my goal.

But, when opening in Photos the folder "recently removed" I found the remaining frames of the burst, so,

I deleted "permanently" in "recently removed" the other frames and then tried to export the remaining frame again ...

It worked : only 1 frame was exported.

I believe this behavior is caused by a complex relationship between different settings with regard to "My Photo Stream" on both devices (phone and PC)

(Note in this discussion I assume iCloud Photo Library is not being used.)

The 2 settings at play:

1) The burst upload setting to My Photo Stream on the phone (see below). Is it set to upload just the key photo, or all photos in a burst?

I set it to only upload the key photo. (i.e. turn OFF "Upload Burst Photos" in settings, below.)

2) My Photo Stream setting on the PC.

I set it to "ON" which causes the Photos app to automatically always import everything from the My Photo Stream.

Here's what I tested:

• Take a burst photo on the phone.
• Phone automatically uploads just the key frame (just 1 photo from the burst, seems to be chosen randomly, also used as thumbnail photo for the burst in the photo list on the phone) to My Photo Stream (must be on Wi-Fi)
• Photos app on PC automatically imports the key frame (1 photo only) into the photo library.
  (verified, this is automatic but takes a couple of minutes and phone has to be on Wi-Fi)
• Go back to phone, select 2 favorites (different than the previous key frame), delete the rest from phone.
• Phone automatically uploads the 2 favorites to My Photo Stream
• Photos app on PC automatically imports the 2 additional photos into the photo library

RESULT:

• Photo library on PC contains a burst image with 3 frames (the original key frame, and the 2 favorites selected afterward)
• Photo library on phone contains only the 2 favorite images, split apart (no longer a burst)

CONCLUSION:

Seems like the only way to "fix" this would be to stop using My Photo Stream on one of the devices.

I haven't had time to research how manual syncing the photos in the Photos app impacts all of the above. Also, what happens when no Wi-Fi is available? In this case I've noticed that sometimes the photos from the phone get automatically uploaded to My Photo Stream, and sometimes they don't. Very unpredictable.

Where are my burst mode photos in My Photo Stream?

When you take photos using burst mode, only your favorite photos are imported to your device. In iOS 7.1 or later, you can choose to save all photos you take using burst mode to My Photo Stream. Tap Settings > iCloud > Photos and turn on Upload Burst Photos.

In Photos on Mac, click Bursts under Albums [sidebar] to locate the burst photos.

Double-click the photo you want to un-burst.

The main photo will appear with Make a Selection button in the upper left corner. Click this.

You are now on the Make a Selection screen, which will show how many photos are in the burst. At the bottom is a thumbnail representation of each the photos.

Select one thumbnail. If you want to keep this photo - Click on the PHOTO to select it. A checkmark will appear on the bottom right of the photo.

Continue the process, selecting each thumbnail in turn and deciding to separate the photo or not by clicking on the ones you want to keep.

When you are done, click Done in upper right corner.

If you have selected all of the individual photos, the burst item will disappear from the Bursts grouping, and they will become individual photos.

If you do not want the remaining photos - if any - in the original burst, then delete it and you have removed it from your devices.

In the Burst smart album click on one of the photos. It will open with a button that says Make a Selection:

Clicking on that will give you the opportunity to select one of the burst photos:

Unfortunately, it seems that Photos defaults to grouping bursts together as a 'stack' & there is no preference to stop this from happening. If you don't like that send Apple feedback about it.

Several of us have already offered the only solution currently possible, which is to duplicate what was done on the iPhone on the Mac. We understand it isn't practical for some users, but there is nothing we can do about that besides suggesting sending feedback to Apple about it.

Things may change with the imminent release of the new version of iOS, or of OS X 10.11, but until they are released & people have a chance to test & make public the results of their tests, there is no point in continuing to ask about it in this now 4+ month old topic.

use the Make selection button upper left corner, click through the bursts, check the circle in lower right corner, Done. Then use jeffreyfrombelton's suggestion
