We really need more background if we are going to attempt to help you here. With what we have so far I could ask if you have plugged in your computer? 😉
Where exactly do things seem to not be working?
Error codes like that are what we need. 🙂
It sounds like a bad CD 😟

General information about error -36 - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3902534?answerId=18221459022#18221459022 - bad disk or format; try using Terminal to copy file.
-43 can sometimes be related to an incompatible file name but that wouldn't be the case with a music CD and is more likely the "File not found" interpretation which = bad CD.
Now you said, "CDs" which is plural. Did you mean that? Is it really more than one CD? If this is happening on all your CDs it could be a bad drive.
Yes I meant plural.
But I restarted the computer for about the tenth time and this time it works again.
I don't know why this is working now. Maybe my drive is on the way out or there is some sort of software problem.
I do need a new mac. This one is getting pretty old.
Thanks for your help.

The only thing I've done different was that I plugged my iPod back in to sinc it with the computer.
Optical drives only last 5 years or so. They are a great place for dust to collect since warm air being pushed out of a computer by fans has to enter somehow and the optical drive is often that place. It is possible you had a bit of dust blocking the laser. You can try a special drive cleaning disc but I have had only so-so success with those. I have had to replace drives roughly every 5 years on my computers even though they do not see very heavy use.
