os X 10.10.3 iPhoto problem

Problem with 10.10.3 and iPhoto on my MacBook.

(I am writing this question on my iMac, running 10.10.2.)

I updated, my MacBook to 10.10.3, having read that I could continue to use iPhoto.

(I have ca. 20,000 photos divided among ca. 20 iPhoto libraries on my iMac,

which I manage with iPhoto Library manager.

and also access remotely from the MacBook.)

When I updated my MacBook to 10.10.3, all was fine,

except that I found that iPhoto had apparently been disabled--big circle with slash over it.

When I tried to open iPhoto anyway, a screen note said to get a new version of iPhoto from the App Store.

When I tried to do this, a note on the App Store said that iPhoto was not available

(at least on the version of the App Store here in Switzerland).

Please tell me how to get a copy of iPhoto here in Switzerland that will run under 10.10.3.

I have looked at the new Photo app. I strongly dislike it, and do not want to convert all my libraries and photos

to run in Photo.

Thank goodness I have not updated my iMac (where my photos reside) to 10.10.3.

Try updating that version of iPhoto to 9.6.1 using App Store update. If it updates, copy the app from that Mac to your other Mac.

I've seen one person say you can update to 9.6.1 if still running 10.10.2 or earlier, but I don't know if that was supposition or actual fact.

If the other Mac is not running Yosemite, then I don't know if it can be updated to that version.

1. Move your current iPhoto app to the trash (don't empty the trash).

2. Login to the App Store and download iPhoto.

3. You should now have iPhoto 9.6.1 on your machine.

4. Delete the Photos Library, KEEP YOUR iPhoto Library.

5. Change your preferences in iPhoto to ensure that connecting a camera is set to open iPhoto. Photos will try to hijack this setting, so make sure it remains set to your preferred application.

You cannot delete Photos, it's part of the OS. But you can completely ignore it by removing it from your dock and placing iPhoto there instead.

Thanks to everyone for helpful suggestions.

What worked:

I was able to deleted the disabled copy of iPhoto on my MacBook running 10.10.3

and replace it with a copy of iPhoto 9.6.1 imported from my iMac running OS X 10.10.2 .

The copy of 9.6.1 from my iMac works on my MacBook.

However, NOW I am afraid to update my iMac from 10.10.2 to 10.10.3

for fear that I will experience the same thing I did with my MacBook

-- that the update to 10.10.3 will disable iPhoto on my iMac.

Eventually, some incompatibility will probably force me to update my iMac to 10.10.3

If iPhoto is once again disabled, maybe I will be able to bring a copy back from MacBook.

Shame on Apple for trying to force us to use the new Photo app.

I hate the interface, and its editing functions are inferior to iPhoto.

Apple apparently does not know (or has reasons for ignoring)

the following fundamental principle:

IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT.

iPhoto must be at version 9.6.1 in order to run under 10.10.3. Any earlier version will be broken like what had happened to you previously. If you cannot directly update your iPhoto to 9.6.1 using the App Store updater before installing the OS X upgrade, then you will need to do exactly what you did for your MacBook to get iPhoto to run again.

All in all, they assumed everyone wanted to use Photos. It's why it's part of the OS and not an add-on application like iLife. You can't get rid of it, you can only choose to ignore it. You just have to be prepared to tell your system that you wish to use iPhoto instead of Photos as it will default to Photos upon initial reboot.

In the meantime, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND, that you make a backup copy of iPhoto 9.6.1 and save it for future use. There is no guarantee that iPhoto will remain available from the App Store in the future. Always make a backup copy of any application that you acquire from the App Store. Same goes for the iTunes store. There is no guarantee anything you download from either will remain available forever. You save a backup of each, you will always have a copy to use again in the future.

It seems the solution is simply to use Photos instead of iPhoto. I can't believe I got caught out by that. 😊

Apple could do a better job of informing users when the they attempt to open iPhoto.
