Can't hear "new email" sound on MacBook Pro

This just started recently...

The first time I open up Mail, it usually makes a sound for new mail. When I leave it open and more new emails come in over the day, I never hear the sound.

Again, this problem only started maybe a week ago.

I have a MacBook Pro connected to a Thunderbolt display. My sound output is set to go through my display audio. Sound works fine using Spotify, etc...goes through display audio.

Thoughts?

sure-this kind of thing happens from time to time. go to system preferences, then alerts, and see what it's set to play sound effects through. If that doesn't work, check out Audio MIDI and see what the Line out/Digital out is set to-should be 44100, and the rest of it doesn't matter as much right now. Other than that, go into mail, then preferences, then general, then play sounds for other mail actions. you can also set the new messages sound here, also

that's all I have for now.
