Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

LOOOONG delays processing commands, spinning wheels for minutes on end despite plenty of RAM and solid-state memory.

This seems to have coincided with installing Yosemite, had no problems with Mavericks. Have read that it can happen with older or low-spec Macs, but this is a top of the line MacBook Pro Retina, 13", late 2013, 2.8 GHz Intel core i5, 8Gb RAM, 12% memory free. Long delays before obeying commands. I am so sick of that spinning wheel!

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), 12% of storage free

Performance issues after installing a new OS are usually the result of having old, incompatible third-party software still installed on your computer. These include software that runs in the background, performing low-level tasks; processes that are started automatically at startup, etc.

You can check Activity Monitor to see what processes are using large amounts of memory or CPU. You can run a utility like EtreCheck, which will give you a checklist of information about your computer, including third-party installed software that affects the system.

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

You can post the results here if you're unsure about its meaning, and someone will will advise if there's anything obvious.

However, 12% free disk space is just about enough spare. I would not want less than that.

Have tried the various things suggested, but it is still lagging intermittently, sometimes hanging fire for a couple of minutes while the wheel spins. Have run Etrecheck and this is the report:

EtreCheck version: 2.2 (132)

Report generated 5/3/15, 4:42 PM

It looks to me as though you have some adware 'Shoppy mate', 'Buca', maybe others. Either follow these instructions:

http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-identification/

or if you want an automated version of those instructions use Adware Medic

http://www.adwaremedic.com/AdwareMedic.dmg

You should only download/install software from either (a) the Mac App Store, or (b) a reputable developers' own website. The link to Adware Medic, in my opinion, is in category (b).

Thanks Eric. It seems that the removal of adware may have solved the problem, but if it persists I will remove Avira as you suggest. Cheers.

I would recommend removing Avira regardless. Keep in mind that it didn't protect you from all that adware that infected your system. In addition, the avlogwriter process, which belongs to Avira, is crashing a lot, according to your logs.

In addition, you need to get rid of Magician. It's garbage. All of its "cleaning" and "uninstalling" features are worthless and ill-advised. As for its "anti-trojan" feature, that's a scam, pure and simple. I tested it against almost 190 malware samples last year, including numerous samples of the most common Mac malware, and it only detected one of them.

May 4, 2015 8:43 AM in response to wedgeis

The recommendation is do NOT install third-party virus protection software. OS X has extensive and superior protection built-in.

Your main risk as long as your machine is physically secure is not virus related, it is being conned by 'adware' websites into installing it. But I guess you know that now...

I have removed both of those. Is there a recommended virus protection software for Mac running Yosemite?

Not really. It's best to use none, as there's no known Mac malware currently able to infect a Yosemite system, but also keep in mind that Mac OS X is not bulletproof. Adware in particular is a big problem right now, and one that neither anti-virus software nor Mac OS X will protect you adequately from. Fortunately, you can easily avoid adware installers on your own. Exercise caution online and you should be fine.

For details, see my Mac Malware Guide.
