connecting to iTunes with iPad Air

I'm trying to run update (to iOS8.3), and back up, connecting iPad Air to iTunes on iMac, it doesn't seem to dock correctly and the screen flickers between charging and connecting and then unconnects immediately saying 'device disconnected'. Anyone else seen this? iPhone 6 connects fine via same cable (lightning)

I Hate to keep asking questions, but sometimes it's tough to offer suggestions without more information. How old is your iMac? The reason I ask is it almost seems like the iPad is struggling to draw power from the USB port like the port is not supplying enough power. The phone doesn't need as much power as the iPad does. I assume that you have tried another USB port on the Mac, correct?
