"Open Photos to see your photos in this list"

Since Photos supplanted iPhoto, my photos do not show up in open file dialogs boxes. Instead, I get the completely unhelpful and inaccurate message, "Open Photos to see your photos in this list."

Thanks, so then what do I do if my photos arent showing up? I cant upload any photos to mpix or Facebook or even attach them to anything via email because every time I go to access photos from anything other than the "Photos" itself, it says "Open Photos to See Your Photos" and leaves me a blank window of no photos. So confusing!

My iPhoto library was transferred to the Photos application and I can access ALL photos I have through Photos when I click on that application, so I dont know that I need to reboot and have them all transferred since they are already there, I just need to somehow find out why when I am going to upload photos to any site whether its Facebook, or Mpix or Linkedin or anything that offers the option to upload photos, isn't showing ANY photos that are in my Photos app! It is the strangest thing. User uploaded fileI have attached the image that doesnt allow me to upload photos...

But when I physically go into Photos, all my photos ARE there, So strange! 😟

See if Terence Devlin's suggestion in this post will let you obtain a working iPhoto for 10.10.3:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

Some third party apps support the OS X "Media" open dialog sidebar category with the "Photos" item in it & some don't. Many will need to be updated to recognize the Photo Library as a photos container, even if they currently recognize the iPhoto (or Photo Booth) libraries as photo containers.

As a test, try selecting the Media > Photos sidebar item in Preview's open dialog. You should see all the libraries listed there that Finder identifies as kind "Photos Library." Do you see Photos listed there, with a disclosure triangle next to its icon?

iPhoto was replaced in the Dock with Photos, and after opening the new app, I can no longer access my iPhoto library either by opening iPhoto, nor in open file dialog's where my iPhoto library previously was always available. That's a pretty forced transition. Your comment is not a helpful addition to this discussion and the problem at hand.

What app displays that message?

If it supports the standard media browser, it should show the Photos.

What you describe seems to be you see Photos listed in the Media browser, but it has that message.

If you are seeing the Photos Library listed, but get that message, it seems the Photos Library is corrupt.

Have you ever opened Photos? You need to for it to create an index to display the thumbnails in the media browser.

However, iPhoto still works in 10.10.3 as long as you update it to the Yosemite version. If you didn't already update it, see here: Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS X 10.10.3

All apps display this message. Photos opens just fine (well, it's so much slower than iPhoto, so not "just fine", but I don't have any problems managing photos). Because Photos can access the library, it doesn't seem likely it's corrupt. And if it is corrupt, well, that's just a broken app, which I was forced to "upgrade" to.

Then something is broken on your Mac. I have both iPhoto (with its library) Photos (with its library) both running on Yosemite. I'm not forced to use either one.

If you had not updated iPhoto prior to 10.10.3, then iPhoto will not open. There is a way around this, but you seem to indicate yours does open, it just cannot find the Library.

You also seem confused at what the Dock is designed to do. It exists to have your most frequently used programs available for quit access. All of your Applications are in the Applications folder. You can place any of those in the Dock so that you can access them quickly. You can also remove things you don't use.
