newbie: No device tab, no device in itunes 12

My iPad is connected by USB (also Wifi) and shows up in Windows Explorer in Windows 7. However, iTunes doesn't look much like every screen shot and video I see on the web. There is no sidebar, no option to show one, no choice of displaying details of devices. No way to get the UDID for example.

Hey expat, follow this article iPhone, iPad, or iPod not recognized in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support it might be helpful, you can also try to Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 - Apple Support

Thanks, but I saw those links before and did all that - including a re-install of iTunes.
