Moving Movies, Pictures & Music folder to an external drive

I bought a jet drive 128GB for my MBA and I want to move my:

1. Movie folder which is about 10GB

2. Music folder which is 5GB

3. Pictures folder which is about 50GB

out to that drive. If I just copy and paste the files over Im sure that will break links from iTunes, Photos/iPhoto and from iMovie.

So how should I proceed?

Thnx

1. You don't move any of those folders. You only move the contents. The OS wants those folders where they are.

For iPhoto (and Photos is exactly the same)

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

1. Quit iPhoto

2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.

3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.

4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

For moving iTunes:

I'd ask on the iMovie forum for help moving its data.

They are different libraries for two different apps.

In the case of moving: this can be caused by a single damaged file or even incorrect permissions on one file. One workaround: use a back up utility to copy the library to the new location. Any utility that makes a straight copy will do. Theres a free trial of Chronosync, for instance, that will do the job: http://www.econtechnologies.com/chronosync/current.html
