Photos from Photos app not accessible in iMovie 10.0.8

When using iMovie 10.0.8, Photos in the new Photos app are not showing up in the Photos heading in the library. Photos under the iPhoto heading are accessible.

Using OS X 10.10.3

Thanks for any help.

I had this same problem as well, but after a few frustrating hours realised that there was an option to import media to iMovie (from files on the computer). It's in the upper left-hand corner of the app if you're in a project and looks like an arrow pointing down. I'm not sure if this is something that everyone knows, but hopefully it helps.

All the best🙂

I had this same problem and I just resolved it using the feedback provided in this thread. I had some difficulty following the thread though, so I am going to post clear instructions here.

The Problem:

While trying to import files from Photos to iMovie, the option to import files from Photos is greyed out. Any attempt to drag and drop files out of Photos and into another file does not work.

The Solution:

  1. In iMovie, select the "Project Media" tab at the top.
  2. In the left pane under "Libraries" select "Photos Libraries," which has a black and white version of the Photos icon.
  3. Now along the top of the "Project Media" area, you should see a drop down menu with various items in it (Shared, Places, Moments, Collections, Years, Albums, and My Albums). Select Years to see all files. Note: at first this drop down menu did not give me all of these options. It only gave me the option to select "shared." After I restarted iMovie, I was able to select the "Years" option to see all of my files in Photos.

If this Solution does not work:

  1. In Photos, select Preferences.
  2. Within Preferences, click "Use as System Photo Library" button.
  3. Restart iMovie and try the above solution.

Hi Lawrence - thank you so very much. I finally got my Photo Library showing in iMovie. Seeing as you are so brilliant, maybe you can answer my next question in relation to this. Even though I got the Photo Library to show in iMovie, it doesn't show my personal albums that I made (which did show before the library disappeared). I made them so that I wouldn't have to go through the whole 5000 odd photos.
