facetime won't verify my email

I have tried all of the standard solutions mentioned like signing out of facetime and imessages and signing back in, turning off the phone etc. I still can't get it to add an email address. Am I possibly doing this in the wrong order or is there some magic trick to making this work? I even reset the phone with no success. Thanks!
