I am trying to import photos from a canon rebel 300 D with mac OS X Yosemite...camera is detected but system is stuck on loading. Nothing happens. Any idea?

Can you see the device with Image Capture (in the Applications Folder)?
Have you tried a card reader?
I am using iPhoto version 9.6.1 (910.42) - this is where the camera is detected - with Mac OS X 10.10.2 and, no, I have not tried a card reader. I never needed it before
...and yes the device is detected by Image capture but it is also spinning endlessly.
