OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Crashing Constantly

The crash symptom is the screen goes black. Holding the power button down does nothing. The only recovery is to unplug, wait for SMC to reset, and restart. It has happened at least half a dozen times today with no apparent provocation (i.e. making a text update to my blog). The problem can be duplicated in Final Cut Pro X 10.2 by editing a complex video (i.e. lots of transitions and layers, etc). That will crash the system in milliseconds and it's consistent. Every other crash seems random.

It's maddening as that video is a red-hot development for me and productivity is finished until this is fixed. Any ideas?

Clean My Mac is one of your issues. Considering all the other old files showing, you might be better off doing a clean install.

I've never seen files under /Volumes. Not only is this location strange, Mouseworks hasn't been updated since 2006. See this old post from 2011.

I have zero confidence a clean install will fix anything as there is no definitive causal relationship between kibble in the system and the symptoms identified. What specific reason leads you to believe these are the cause, please?

My suggestion for the clean install was for the other poster. When more than one user starts asking for help in the same post it gets confusing.

We've spent more time discussing this than a clean install would take.

Portlandiaan 90 year oldmanrobert has owned Apple computers since he shed the COMMODORE 64. The random shutdowns is the very first issue of any sort with my computers that I have experienced. I securely trashed the suspect Flash Players, reinstalled them, and ran My Clean Mac. This was completed about midnight PDST. I have had no shutdowns in about 13 hours. Many thanks.

Removing Flash Player makes sense as the diagnostic log for Webkit shows Flash all through it. In the mainframe tech world, we call that debugging.

Installing base Yosemite on a partition on a USB3 disk failed three times in a row about a minute after it had booted into the install system.

Trying the install on a USB2 disk without the USB3 attached failed twice in a row.

There are no other places to try it.

After playing pattycake with software, I decided to debug it another way.

Any attempt to load the base OS X Yosemite to a Firewire 800 drive failed with the black screen I've seen repeatedly. Therefore, the plan became to connect the drive to the laptop and install it there. If that completes successfully, I will bring the drive back to the iMac to see if it will boot.

This is Yevette's computer and I will update from here as it goes. It's just about at the point now at which the screen would go black during the install on the iMac We shall see.

1:59 Update

It's now well past the point of previous failures.

Note: one variable between this and the attempts on the iMac. This is a Firewire drive which was connected with a Thunderbolt adaptor. That is not supported on the laptop so it was removed for this install.

2:06 Update:

Laptop booted into Yosemite 10.10.3 with no trouble and is in setup now.

2:17 Update:

Firewire drive with virgin copy of Yosemite 10.10.3 was re-connected via the Thunderbolt adaptor to the iMac. The adaptor is required as this iMac does not support Firewire. The system came up and the next move is to boot into the virgin system to install Final Cut 10.2 on it. That will create a pristine system with no chance of any non-Apple ingredients.

2:28 Update:

Attempting to boot into the system I successfully booted from the laptop causes a black screen when I try it on the iMac.

I am becoming deeply-suspicious of the Thunderbolt adaptor as there is no other variable. I have left the drive with the Thunderbolt drive powered-down. One possible validation is if I go into Final Cut 2.0 and can successfully edit the video. If yes then the Thunderbolt adaptor is the cause. Here goes.

2:35 Update:

Final Cut 10.2 failed just as it had previously.

What has been gained:

There is no chance third-party software is causing the problem because none of it was loaded. There were only two products on the test system, OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 and Final Cut 10.2.

There is something deeply sick in Yosemite 10.10.3 and the only thing for sure at this point is that Apple owns the problem, regardless of whether they're willing to admit it.

2:42 Update:

Interruption due to yet another spontaneous black screen crash. Prior to restarting, I disconnected the Thunderbolt adaptor from the machine. There will now be another test with Final Cut to see if that disconnection made any difference.

2:47 Update:

Failure is exactly the same. This, as much as possible, eliminates hardware as the problem. The Firewire drive wasn't even connected.

My conclusion remains the same. The poisoning of Final Cut comes from Apple. Hardware is eliminated at the disk and computer level as the source of the problem. The virgin system has nothing but Apple software on it.

Whether it's OS X Yosemite 10.10.3, Final Cut 10.2 or a combination of the two is beyond my willingness to debug as it's clearly Apple's problem and no-one else can fix it.

Sorry if I hijack this thread again, but maybe it's interesting to see my bug report from a black screen crash i had 2 min ago... working with fcpx. Maybe anyone has a clue what is going on.

Edit: At first fcpx crashed, it disappeared, my imac freezed... and 5 sec. later...boom...black screen and restart.

Symptoms are similar. The only recovery for mine is to unplug to reset the SMC. Apple Hardware Diagnostics check out fine.

The only relationship to a panic attack is that the computer is down. The other symptoms don't match in any way. It takes an SMC reset to boot it again.

wait, so you did the "clean install" on a laptop, and then mounted that "clean" system in your iMac?

if I understood that incorrectly, please let me know.

If that is what you did, it's not a system disk I would want to base my video post-production workstation on... It likely will work, and maybe not exhibit any bad behaviour, for now. However, unless things have changed a lot in the way that OS X installers work (whether DVD or downloaded ESD or mounted USB Volume) since way back in the snow leopard days and beyond, The installer would have loaded packages PERFECTLY SUITED FOR THE LAPTOP THE INSTALLER WAS RUNNING ON. This means, in many cases, packages, kexts, etc that are NOT perfectly suited for your iMac.

It will work, but it's kind of like buying specialized trim and custom rims for your particular car, then going to another vehicle, and whatever doesn't match, you just have to drop, and use stock parts (stock, in this analogy, being default settings for generic hardware... instead of driver for gt-750, for instance, perhaps you'll be running a generic PCI-e VGA adapter driver. I don't know that this is what happens with the graphics adapter, in particular; this is just an analogy) or the heat, hammer, and shoehorn the parts from the other car into the new one (sometimes situations like this arise during OS X version upgrades, creating a messy system - i format and install clean every single time. it's worth the extra effort).

I'm not the best at analogies, and perhaps apple now installs every kind of kernel extension, plist, preference pane, etc quietly in some untouched folders, so that when you transfer your drive like that, OS X just installs the new software matching the changed hardware, and it's as good as new.. i have no idea and don't have time to research it right now..

so, take it for what it's worth.. I'm currently a full time Systems Administrator and Net Admin for a multi campus private school, but I worked in the pro video field for 8-9 years full time, and still freelance. I can tell you that, ESPECIALLY WITH VERSIONS SINCE MOUNTAIN LION, I've had many issues solved by just backing up, formatting the volume completely, not just the "macintosh HD" partition, and installing via USB or thunderbolt drive, allowing the installer to recreate the EFI and Recovery partitions, along with the Mac HD partition. so when yosemite came out, I still tried an upgrade first (after backing up) but ended up trashing it and doing clean install.. had many small issues, hard to quantify right now, but it's feeling smooth and very non-buggy since clean install and then software updates.

[edit] wait.. now i'm wondering if 10.10.3 is problematic in and of itself, perhaps for people with pro video apps.. I just started using this current mac a week ago, and initially updated all the way to 10.3 ,and i was having issues.. it's a refurb so it shipped with it's original OS (mavericks). i assumed as usual that the issues were due to doing an upgrade to yosemite vs. clean install.. BUT i haven't installed the 10.3 combined update on this "clean installed" system yet!.. i just haven't had the time, as i notice the reminder during work, and don't have time for a whole reboot-and-install routine this last week. so, for all i know, it COULD get buggy once i install the update.. I'll do it and test things, and let you all know.. for the sake of group troubleshooting.

also, i NEVER use things like clean my mac, or mackeeper or anything similar.. it's not helpful in the long run, and sometimes can actually mess things up. steer clear. standard apple setup, and keeping things fairly tidy, will always yield the best long term results, in terms of stability and speed.

Thanks for your update and I did do it by the book. Yosemite base was installed rather than cloned and Migration Assistant was used to bring the laptop contents forward to the iMac minus a couple of folders the doc advised to leave behind. That was fine through 10.10.2. Solid as a rock. It crashes right after installing 10.10.3 and keeps doing it.

I got fed-up with it and had no good answer so I put it aside for some days. Next move was to bring it up with nothing but keyboard and trackpad. This approach worked fine up to bringing on one of the disks so I could try opening the video which previously I had not been able to open under 10.10.3 / FC 10.2 but now, with limited peripherals, it opens and renders with no trouble. I've worked back up from there and the only device missing from the mix is a USB 3.0 hub which I did not restore yet.

It was crashing constantly and it's not doing it now. The video crashed it every time. Now zip. If that USB hub really does turn out to be the culprit then I'll have to smash it with a brick but it seems so ludicrous for such a thing to cause such chaos. There was some concern it was the Firewire to Thunderbolt adaptor as there are many complaints about it but testing that didn't crash it either.

I owe a resolution on this one but it looks like major magic just now. I've been doing systems for more decades than I want to know and this is the first time any system stopped me cold.

There are still some items I didn't restore other than the USB hub. There were some USB cables which were not connected to anything. One was for a camera and another for an SD card reader. (I know the iMac has one built-in. I just haven't tried it yet.)

All of those things are so benign that I have no good answer to what fixed it but it looks as solid now as it was before the upgrade.

There were software offenders charged here by other contributors but they were removed prior to setting it aside and it still crashed. The evidence seems clear that some combination of these peripherals chokes 10.10.3. I will keep experimenting as something poisons it but it's just not clear what it was.
