Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Where are movies shared to Apple devices stored exactly? When I shut down FCPX the shared movie disappears from iTunes.

FCPX v10.2

Destination settings:

Apple Devices 1080p

Video Codec: H.264 Better Quality

Resolution: 1920x1080

Add to playlist: Library

Many thanks for anyone who can help me before I completely lose my mind!

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

I just tried an export on mine.

The export to iTunes stayed where it was supposed to even when FCP X was closed. I sent mine to the iTunes Library.

Maybe your created folder is the issue with the deleting??

The Shared folder files in FCP X has been dumping exports for a few versions now even though it has not always done so.

Why Apple has done this is beyond my comprehension.

User uploaded file

Note: This is the first iTunes export I've done since the 10.2 update.

The quality is abysmal for some reason and I'm going to have to try a few variants to end up with something acceptable.

So here's what I've had to do - sounds ridiculous and I'd love to hear if anyone else has experienced this issue or has a better solution.

  1. Share project - in my case to Apple Device
  2. Open iTunes, ctl-click on the newly shared file and "Show in Finder"
  3. Manually copy the file to your iTunes library folder. Annoyingly this leaves the resolution in the file name (e.g., "(1920x1080)" ) but that can be removed later.

Better than having to re-share the movie file every time you want to watch it on your AppleTV.

Found a possible solution on another thread that worked for me, hopefully it'll work for you...

In the iTunes preferences, under the Advanced tab, I needed to check the box to "Copy files to iTunes Media Folder when adding to library."

After I did this the movie would show up in my Home Videos folder and in iTunes. Unfortunately I can't take the credit for this, but hope it helps...

May I add my two cents worth here and note that Apple's insistence on giving us no control over this matter is simply maddening.

I output shares and Lord knows where I am going to find them. If I WANTED them in iTunes, which I emphatically do not, I would send them there, but

for God's sake, why do you not give the user the ability to decide where they are to be output. I can't tell you how much time I have wasted trying to track down share outputs with this bloody system of yours. It seems to be part of an Apple mindset that it always knows what is best for the user and giving us any control over the matter is somehow a giant mistake..

Thanks for clearing up my little head-scratcher, Tom. I have been exporting to my own personally designated folder for years. Then I took my brand new shiney MacBook on a road trip to continue editing a video. The first surprise at the first stop was that th font was using was not on the MB, and iMac was 900 mi away.

But back on subject, when I got around to sharing to an apple device, it gave me no choice except iTunes, although I was able to drag a copy from iTunes to the folder. Thot it was something about the MB, so thanks for the answer I haven't had occasion to seek since FCPX first came out. Now I'll just hav to keep the page open til I get home,as I looked it up at a soccer game.

And from home after checking it out, just to clarify the details for others:

Dunno how this works for any other share selections, but for 720 or 1080 iDevice share, once it is selected, click the "Settings" button, and where it sez "when done", click the default "Library" for a drop-down menu. At the top of that menu, select "do nothing". When you then click "Next" in the lower right, it will bring up a box with the default filename giving you a chance to change the file name and select where you wish to save the file. (Remember that the "v" next to the file name opens up the folders for the "Where" that has been selected.)

Hope this helps any other random seekers. Can't say I found it intuitive, but it must have been easy the first time I did it years ago on my iMac. When looking at the choices on my MB while away from my iMac, I failed to see the "do nothing" option at the top.

Oh. I see Tom beat me to this information by 3 minutes, using fewer words..
