Work out app on my apple watch keeps pausing

my work out app keeps pausing on my apple watch when the screen shuts off after about 45 seconds. I'd like to find out how to fix. I can't use this watch for work outs at all if it keeps doing this. Only time I got longer then that I had to hold up my arm and touch the screen every 20 seconds to keep it from going off. That kind of makes a work out hard to do and shouldn't have to do this to keep it going.

Here is the fix to the problem of the Apple Watch pausing during workouts with the screen locked. I have discovered that with the screen locked, it does not lock the crown and side button. This is by design. So, even with the screen locked if both the crown and side button are pressed at the same time the workout will pause. For me, this happens every time my wrist bends and the workout glove touches both the crown and side button. Now for the fix! Or, rather a work around. You have two options. Option 1, Take off your Apple Watch, Go into settings, General, Orientation, If your Digital Crown is set to right, change it to left and vice versa. Now, switch the the watch bands around and put the longest band nearest the crown. Put the Apple Watch on your wrist. If everything was done correctly, you should be able to view your screen properly and the crown and side button are now on the opposite side and away from your wrist. Now, bending your wrist will not touch the crown or side button and the Apple Watch will not pause during your workout! Option 2, wear your Apple watch on the opposite wrist. This will put the crown and side button on the opposite side and prevent contact when the wrist is bent. Option 1 has saved me a lot of hassle during my workouts and I either option will help you too. Of course, it does take a little adjustment relearning how to press the buttons that are now on the opposite side. Enjoy!

Workouts may also be paused or ended early due to accidental interactions with your watch's screen (including by clothing). To help prevent this, you can lock the screen:

- At any time after starting a workout, press firmly on the display and tap on Lock.

- When you are ready to end the workout, press firmly again and first tap on Unlock.

Many recommend using the workout app in "Other" mode. Today I tried that and it worked perfect on the treadmill . When I usedon the stationary bike, the problem was reintroduced , was to "pause". Then I remembered that I had advised to block thescreen with "force touch ", once done that began to run perfectly. In short, I can´t define well what is the source of the problem but at least i'm finding ways to make it work properly.

Before this , I calibrate the clock for 20 minutes walking outdoors as Apple recommends.

Anyway we should clarify that the app should work correctly in all modes and not only in " other " ...

I have tattoos on my arm and a portion of one ( a thick black line ) goes through my wrist just below where the sensor is. I remember when Apple launch the Watch his support page confirm that tattoos are causing trouble reading the heart rate, so this may be the reason for the failure ... Apple recommends disabling the " detection wrist " for cases like this, I'll try...😕

I am using my AppleWatch Series 1 (steel metal) since almost 18 months for my workouts (cross trainer) and it worked perfectly well. Only since I have installed WatchOS 3 (it happened first time on 23rd October), I am experiencing exactly the same problem as described. After 45 seconds or even less, the training app is pausing. As my hardware is exactly the same, I suspect it is the new version of the OS carrying the problem. I have installed the latest verion (WatchOS 3.1) but still experiencing the problem.

Just to close out any other opinions: I have no tattoo, still using the same band, regardless whether I lock the screen or not, it still pauses after 34 - 45 seconds.

the same problem here

the wrong detection of wrist(off wrist but actually on wrist) cause the problem

stand up reminder won't work(count 0 stand and 0 non-stand)

automatically detecting heart beat rate won't work

if passcode enabled, it locks every time when the screen go off(watch is still on wrist)

but when raising wrist the screen will turn on

suggest you get it replaced before warranty expired

mine just expired

I been having the same issue since I got the watch earlier this year (2016). But using the Under Armor app has helped in a big way. It tracks your workouts and heart rate. Then my UA app feeds into Apple Health app. I then tie the health app into My fitness pal app. It all works flawlessly. I prefer this method over the dumb Apple Watch workout app that thing is a joke.

For the record in all my testing it's the only app that pause. The Nike app is good also. Hope this help.
