Installing "older" version of app to work on Ipod 4G

I love my Ipod. However recently every app I own or want seems to be incompatible with my beloved.

I downloaded 2 apps I'd really like to use on my pod to ITUNES. When I click install in TUNES it says "will install"

On my IPOD the icon has a never ending "downloading .. installing" icon, and then - nothing.

I was never given the option to pick an earlier version of Map my run, or Map my Fitness

Any help would be greatly appreciated, because

I REALLY love my Relic Pod!!

I also keep getting reminders to update apps, then told can't because I'm not running version 7 or better. grrr

Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)

App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club

App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app

You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.

OK, tried again. The error message on my computer in Itunes

"Some of the Apps in your Itunes library, including 7news, (and 25 other apps) were not installed on Ipod because they are not compatible with this Ipod"

However, existing apps (of the 25 not installed) on Ipod continue to work, just can not update. And apparently can not install app not already existing (even though I tried the work around)

The new app I'd like installed is

Map My Run and / or Map my Fitness

Try:

- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost

Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at

least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

- Go to Settings.iTunes and App Store and sign out and sign back in

- Reset all settings

Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.

All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

- Restore from backup. See:

iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes

- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
