Why is my Photo Delete option greyed out?

MacBook Pro / iPhone 6 plus

I went to iTunes>iPhone>Settings>Photos and it says iCloud sharing is on. There is no checkbox for Auto Sync to turn on or off as suggested by an older post. I am trying to delete photos while in Photo on my laptop, but the delete option is greyed out.

I don't want to have to select thousands of photos one by one.

If an album in Photos on the iPhone has more than a few hundred photos, the "Select All" button will not appear, which is bit annoying. But then you can select one photo and side your finger across several rows of photos to select them all together. If you hit the border of the display while sliding, keep holding the finger tip down at the border of the display and the photos will scroll below your finger tips. It is quite easy to select several hundreds of photos this way to trash them all at once.

But better do not let Recently deleted get too full, for two reasons.

  1. If there are hundreds of photos in Recently Deleted, it is difficult to check for photos you did accidentally delete and need to put back.
  2. And if you the Recently Deleted album has more than 2000 photos or so, and I try to empty it, my iPhone will just hang and I have to force restart it.

Is there a way to delete the "already imported" photos on my iPhone using iPhotos on MacOS?

1.) I plug my phone in, and open iphotos.

2.) go to the import window by selecting the iphone icon on the left side top interface area

3.) Iphotos shows X number of photos already imported.

4.) select show all

5.) Cannot use "select all"

6.) cannot use "delete"

Are you using iPhoto or Photos? Are you using iCloud Photo Library for storage?

An alternative to delete on the iPhone is to open Image Capture and manage your device from it. You can also open up the application on the iPhone and delete them from there. You can select all photos at once on the iPhone and delete at one time.

If you use iCloud Photo Library, deleting on one device will delete photos on all devices where it is enabled.

Photos app on macOS. No I don't use iCloud Photo Library. my photo library is huge and it would be stupidly expensive.

How do you select all the photos at once on the iPhone? I don't want to have to select thousands of photos one by one.

I don't understand why Apple has to make this so frustratingly difficult. You are in an app (photos). There is a "select all" command that doesn't work, and a "delete" command that doesn't work.

I have to go use a completely different app to manage the photos on my iPhone.

This was much easier in iPhoto.

I am not sure how I can be any more clear. I am trying to delete photos while in Photo on my laptop, but the delete option is greyed out. A search of old posts said to go to iTunes>Devices>iPhone>Settings>Photos and uncheck a box that says "Sync to Folder" but when I go there the only thing showing is "iCloud Sharing is On" and there is no option for me to check or uncheck anything.
