failed to shut down. cannot reboot
MacBook Pro. Didn't shut down because applications open. Then cannot use, open, close. Mouse moves, but nothing functions. Force quit application, still locked. How can I shut down or reboot?

Press and hold the MBP's power button until it shuts down. That takes five seconds or so.

eventually, the command/esc worked. I had tried to hold down the power button, but it seems it just needed some time for either to work. thanks very much.
