Kernel panic in Yosemite 10.10.3

Problem description:

Kernel panic in Yosemite 10.10.3. 1 or 2 times a day. Not sure if it is software or hardware. I did not have this problem with Mavericks. I require full functionality of Adobe Creative Suite Master Collection (CS6), Logic Pro X, Final Cut Pro X and many other graphic design and sound design apps. Should I backgrade to Mavericks?

You need to know if the same memory slot was reporting the issue to decide if the slot could be the cause. You can try inspecting them but it may be impossible with the Mac assembled 😟

Some models had 'memory risers' which the RAM slots into & then the riser slots onto the logic board, like these…

Drew, I ran this command in Terminal, as you suggested: memory_pressure -l critical

My Mac Pro 2009 4,1 "ship" did not pop any rivets. I have had no kernel panics for more than 24 hours, ever since doing an internet re-install of 10.10.3 via the Restore partition. After doing that, I was prompted to reinstall a few things (including Java so I could run Adobe Illustrator CS6). Other apps seem to be fine. By the way, my memory pressure is normally in the low green range, even when doing video and/or audio editing. It was quite thrilling to see those mountains of red.

Is it possible that Yosemite is giving false kernel panic reports that point a finger at memory modules? I don't think my three 4 GB sticks magically healed themselves, so it has to be software, not hardware. In fact, I am going to put my five 1 GB sticks back in. Would it be helpful for me to post another EtreCheck report, in case someone wants to sleuth for differences in my before and after configs? I did delete a few obsolete/unsupported start-up kexts.

Here is a snapshot of my pressure test:

Strictly speaking, the kernel panic won't be false, but the most likely interpretation (bad RAM) may not be the only interpretation.

In your position, my first priority would be to get hold of a copy of the original disks and run the hardware test. While waiting for them to arrive...

You removed some memory and the frequency of panics changed. That seems significant to me; a possible explanation could be that in the new arrangement the dodgy memory was left in situ but in an address range that wasn't being exercised much. So, I would remove one 4GB stick and replace it with four 1GB sticks. Run for a few days then swap the 'resting' 4GB stick for one of the other two. Work through until you have run with each of the 4GB sticks out of the picture.

My approach to these problems is to be very systematic and keep careful notes. Maintain a table listing all the possibilities and against each one list the evidence that you have and why you feel it can be used to rule the possibility out.

I've seen lots of other reports of instant, recurring kernel panic after upgrading to Yosemite. I don't buy your argument. Everything was quite placid with Mavericks for well over a year. Then all these kernel panics after upgrading to 10.10.3. All I can draw from several assertions here in this discussion is that my memory is BAD for Yosemite 10.10.3 but GOOD for Mavericks. So, don't blame the physical stick(s). Blame Apple's programming errors and omissions. Backward compatibility with legacy hardware and software is not as much a priority as it was in the glory days of "Apple serving graphic designers." There is too much focus on the ideal of "Continuity" between iOS and Mac OS X – which puts graphic workstations at risk. iCloud may be a factor in all this. It was a helluva thing watching my system migrate, in fits and starts, from Yosemite 10.10.2 to 10.10.3. Mac Mail had a royal fit for days. iTunes Match keeps requiring log-offs and logins in order to do its synchronizing with my other devices (MBP 17 and iPhone). And Photos was crashy and bandwidth-busy for days. I started shutting down parts of iCloud in order to get "back to business" as a serious print, web and cinema designer.

I am willing to accept the theory that it is my non-Mac-edition NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 graphics card that is causing kernel panics (as others have figured with similar NVIDIA PC cards). But the kernel panics have ceased – which had been occurring while working and sleeping, 1 to 3 times a day.

Time will tell. I'll be back with a report. I will start by putting all memory modules back in – in order to invite trouble again. And I will run more memory pressure tests.

I will also order the AHT disk from Apple. But it won't do me any good unless I flash my non-Mac GeForce GTX 680, or retrieve the original Mac Pro 2009 graphics card (with EFI boot) from my son.

May 7, 2015 4:12 PM in response to Richard Schletty

You don't have to buy an argument from me because I am not selling one. You have (a) panic reports that point the finger of suspicion at RAM, and (b) an empirical observation that removing 33% of the RAM changes the frequency of panics dramatically. I did not offer a diagnosis just a strategy that was reasonable in what you have told us are your circumstances.

So, don't blame the physical stick(s). Blame Apple's programming errors and omissions.

The line between hardware and software may not be as clear as you seem to believe. Yosemite uses dynamic memory-compression, a technique that stresses memory and processors in order to improve performance in a way that Mavericks did not.

May 7, 2015 4:38 PM in response to cdhw

Understood, cdhw. I had to say what I said to express my frustration for losing about 12 hours of work time last week. I cannot afford kernel panics from a Mac OS X upgrade so highly touted by Apple as being rock-solid as a mountain.

I would not have upgraded to Yosemite if a couple critical video and graphics editing apps weren't practically "forcing" me to do so. One is Color Finale (by Color Grading Central) for Final Cut Pro X (no support for this plug-in in Mavericks...and it was crippled when I tested it in Mavericks). However, upon upgrading to Yosemite, I find that my Apple-designed Audio Units (AU) plug-ins aren't working in some of my DAWs. So it goes. I have been and continue to be resilient for many years – I've been using the Mac for graphic design since about 1987 (my first was a Mac 512Ke with a 200MB external drive). I've been around.

Here is my empirical evidence, so far. Critical pressure applied to all original eight memory modules. I am including a snapshot of the pressure test plus an EtreCheck done while the test was in progress. No kernel panic.

Problem description:

Progress report. My Mac Pro 2009 4,1 has stopped having kernel panics after a Recovery Partition internet re-install of Mac OS X 10.10.3. I reinserted the five 1 GB memory modules I had removed. I will do memory pressure tests to see if the kernel panic will occur again. Is it a hardware or software issue? Is it the fault of my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 graphics card? Was it old video drivers?

May 7, 2015 5:01 PM in response to Richard Schletty

In addition to the obvious question about why 1Password is crashing so frequently...

Are you sure that this extension:

com.netopia.timbuktu.pro.host.plist

is compatible with OS X 10.10 ? It's website:

http://www.arrisi.com/products/product.asp?id=1027

says "Timbuktu Pro version 8.8.3 for Mac OS X Lion is here", which doesn't exactly inspire confidence. Can't you use VNC instead?

C.

May 7, 2015 5:34 PM in response to cdhw

Oh my! I cannot give up my precious Timbuktu. I have had that since version 1, many eons ago. Just one of a few remote access tools I have. When one fails, I use another. I also use Apple's Remote Desktop app and Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection (RDC). Timbuktu "just keeps working" and is secure enough for my needs. I do use VNC as a tunnel for remote controlling my Macs with iOS iTeleport.

I saw that 1Password baloney at the bottom of the EtreCheck report and reinstalled version 5. I hope that stops the crashing. The Mini version (in the menu bar) was not launching. It is now working.

May 8, 2015 1:47 AM in response to cdhw

Tonight, I flashed my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 graphics card. Now I have the initial EFI boot screens such as the boot picker. I should be able to run AHT -- Apple Hardware Test. My method for ROM flashing: I installed Windows 7 into Bootcamp in order to get direct access to the NVIDIA card via a Command line and executed the EXE flash program. A geekish procedure. I am glad I finally turned my PC graphics card into the "Mac Edition." Still no kernel panics since reinstalling Yosemite 10.10.3 two days ago.

May 8, 2015 11:34 AM in response to Richard Schletty

FWIW you can use memory_pressure with the '-l warn' argument to take it up to the point where swapping would occur (swapping is the red portion of the graph). I figured forcing swap could put some pressure on the disk IO too. I can't diagnose Kernel Panics very well, so I figured loading the system could provoke one as it is unclear what the cause of your KP's is.

There is quite a lot of third part software in those reports, personally I don't trust anything with 'SIMBL' in the name…

com.synology.SynoSIMBL.plist

com.synology.SynoSIMBL_RefreshFinder.plist

SIMBL is hack that tries to modify core parts of the OS or app code - generally used to add features to apps that Apple didn't consider making. It also seems out of date to me. Maybe Synology have a good reason to use it & have tested it all thoroughly, but it concerns me, hopefully the name is a coincidence.

Are Logmein, Teamviewer, GoToMeeting used in addition to Timbuktu? Thats 4 remote access apps in addiction to Apples built in VNC/ ARD. Also there is the Citrix web plugin.

What are your 5 /etc/hosts entries for? If those are to block app updates to allow pirated software to run there is no telling what else could be installed with those types of apps.

Thanks for all your help, Drew. I've used Logmein, Teamviewer and GoToMeeting in the past. It's time to de-install those.

Synology seems to be on top of things. I get periodic security and functionality updates to my Synology DSM operating system (now at DSM 5.1-5022 Update 5). Of course, that is stuff residing on the Synology NAS box which has an INTEL Atom D2700 CPU running a Linux Kernel. Not sure I would consider their stuff "out of date." Mike Bombich with Carbon Copy Cloner makes accommodations for mounted Synology volumes. There are shortcomings such as Spotlight not being able to index Synology volumes, and the inability of the Synology file system to capture some of the Mac file attributes. But the Synology DS1513+ been good for me, providing LAN and WAN access to my media, redundancy and web services.

I believe Synology Cloud Station (a Dropbox-like sync tool installed on my Mac Pro) uses SynoSIMBL. I haven't had Cloud Station active for the past few weeks, so I think I'll delete those plists. Some info here: http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=194&t=80301&start=65

My hosts file has entries for local web development using DesktopServer (by ServerPress) and MAMP Pro (using localhost loopback). Nothing related to pirating! See hosts entries below.

Yes, I have an awful lot going on in my Mac Pro. I have a similar setup on my MacBook Pro 17 4,1 – my fallback workstation in case the Mac Pro goes down (as it did last week).

Two days without kernel panic with all the original memory modules installed. I'm thinking NVIDIA drivers were the issue.

SIMBL is the thing I have issue with, it did code injection into apps which broke every time Apple released major changes, it's unclear if it is doing similar things for Synology. Frankly if the cloud drive app is only syncing like Dropbox on the local network I'd consider setting up a CCC or rsync job to sync every hour or so.

I have similar hosts for local testing too, it just seems every other occasion is for circumventing Adobe updates I'm glad I'm wrong here 🙂
