Problem description:

iMac 21 i5 (late 09) has dropped the boat anchor… it takes minutes to execute any instruction, but for the most part, does complete that instruction as long as you don’t’key ahead with other line executions… …oved Malware MacKeeper, but did not resolve issues

I need another set of eyes to look at this listing for something I’m m’ssing… thx

The fix that works in many (all?) cases for the 'discoveryd 100% CPU on Yosemite' issue, which is at least one of the issues you seem to have, is

Use 'Finder > Go' to go to this folder:

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/

Delete the file 'preferences.plist' and restart your Mac. Google for the above path if you want further details.

The Community consensus is also that you should also uninstall CleanMyMac using the developer's instructions.

Also, I've never seen EtreCheck fail to run system_profiler before. You should try using

Applications > Utilities > Disk FirstAid

to verify/repair the disk and repair permissions and then try running it again.

You have removed the King of crapware, MacKeeper, but you still have the crown prince, CleanMyMac, installed. If the developers were truthful they would call it TakeABigShitOnMyMac. As you seem to be learning (the hard way), these "cleaner" apps are scams. They are unnecessary and harmful on Macs.

You should uninstall CleanMyMac but it (and MacKeeper) may have done more harm to your OS than can be fixed by just uninstalling them. You may need to erase your HD and start over from scratch with a clean install of the OS.

Thanks for the reply,

if i didn't have multiple iMac, pads, phones, and even an old LT, I'd still be waiting on the Beach Ball to implode in order to be able to give you a quick answer.

Just FYI, the last etrecheck was run in "safe" mode and gave those failures i hadn't seen before.... but the "King" was still installed at that time....

I wanted to let everyone know, "work in progress" to do the above and will reply with final results later.... (the delay time to execute any instruction is unbelievable)

thx again for taking time out on this Great Sunday Morn to play "Fix that Mac"

I think you will want to check your disk drive with Disk Utility as pretty much the first part of your quest. If it's the original drive (I think that ST3500418ASQ probably is) five years is pretty good going. What's the 'SMART' status for the drive? Can you verify and repair it successfully also repair its permissions.

to all, but since "cdhw" open the door,

this unit has always been SS (sorta slow) not like the Bowtie models....

ok, enough humor....

last week, when the problem started, the Hard Drive was my first suspicion as the point of failure...

after all, I am an old ****, but a retired OF from 40 yrs mainframe tech, so i can have such thoughts and then later discover I went the wrong path...LOL

now back to the issue at hand, if you are still with me....

all Disk Utilities passed with no failures... but i get your point...

I have no problem, with a new install of one of the SSD disks... I welcome your opinion

and

since Yosemite is / was a soft download, where will the new Yosemite come from... ?

I will only take "the wife's data" on flash drives to the new system...

I am located within 20 miles of an Apple store. Is Yosemite on a DVD available ?

thx

ps, the sickie iMac is nearing power down after removal of all of the above.... told you it was slow...

My opinion is that if you've done the checks and your HDD ain't broke there's no compelling reason to replace it.

What I would recommend, however, that you have a plan for what you are going to do on the day you wake up your iMac and are greeted with a frozen display and an unnatural clicking sound coming from it. Obviously, at least one Time Machine backups will be part this plan.

That Mac has been affected by CleanMyMac, which must be removed. Its presence may explain the apparent inability for EtreCheck to accurately extract and report certain system details. A corrupted Mac cannot be relied upon to accurately diagnose itself.

To recover from the effects of having used it, read below.

It is not reasonable to expect a Mac to operate normally after using CleanMyMac. Like many ill-conceived "cleaning" utilities, it is capable of corrupting a Mac to the point that erasing it completely is the only practicable means of recovery. CleanMyMac is not the only example; it is merely popular due to marketing strategies that are as effective as they are intrusive.

There is no practicable way to reverse the effects of having used CleanMyMac2 other than to reinstall all affected files from backups or their original sources. Its developer's uninstallation instructions are ineffective despite their recent claims to the contrary. Only MacPaw, its developer, can know the reason for that, but I can think of two possibilities: either they are purposefully leaving components behind for reasons known only to them, or they simply don't know what they're doing. Neither one of those possibilities is particularly comforting for the user.

Reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system.

Follow the applicable recovery procedure below:

  • If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
  • If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
    • The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
    • When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
    • Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
    • "Non-essential software" is a broad category that includes but is not limited to third party "cleaning", "maintenance", and "anti-virus" products.

To erase and install Yosemite read: OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X

To migrate your essential documents read: OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device and follow the procedure under Transfer info from a Time Machine backup or other storage device.

I would like to Thank "all" for your input to this problem. I apologize for my absence, however "life" had other duties to preform. Let me bring those that are still interested in this "challenge" up to date of some activity while absent. This iMac (the broke one) is the wife's "Kitchen" system to keep recipes on, do internet searches to prove me wrong about things, and lots of emails from personal and business mail boxes. Nothing on this system was "Life Critical" and i could have done away with the system weeks ago, but the problem has my curiosity more than anything to find and resolve the issue. I make no excuses or alibi for procedures done now or in the past. Again, I appreciate "your input". It is nice to see some of you still out there helping others with their problems as you did with mine many yrs ago. I know the Power Mac, Centris, Quatra,PowerBook, and two Minis from the 90's and early 2000's, all resting in retirement in the basement, appreciated your involvement also. As with any needy Apple user, take my statements with a grain of salt and feel free to question my actions and results. You won't offend me.

For OT (Old Toad), this system is a Late 2009 iMac 21.5, 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB (2 4G cards) 1067MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce9400 256 MB

EtreCheck has been run numerous times with the same results. If the report would yield anything different than submitted at the beginning, I will forward....

FYI : Only this iMac had the Mac Keeper and Clean My Mac downloaded and HOWEVER they were never RUN or Executed. But if I were to believe that the creating co.s didn't have the ability to Look See what they were building a nest in, I would be the NAIVE' one in the crowd.

I don't use iCloud for backup, and never will, that is my first amendment right. I have sufficient hard drives running mirrored images to protect my 27" development system, but do not use any for the 21.5". I was able to move files / folders off to a flash card yesterday in spite of the enormous time consumption it takes to do the simplest tasks asked.

At this time, i will return control of your monitor back over to you for further instructions.

I have located the last of the "CleanMyMac" and am in the process of removing and verifying the removal procedures got all of the nasty little bugger ....

I will update upon a good verification and a rerun of ErteCheck

again, txs

OT,

each keystoke takes an average of 3 mins to execute...... babysitting the system to be able to proceed to the next step as quickly as possible, I have not left the system on it's own for the last 3 hrs.... I found, not only had two of CMyM files still existed and an alias was dated last week and the folder dated 2010, but the Trash had not truly emptied during procedures the other day. Now emptied.....

Reboot now in process and if it will complete without going to sleep (which seems to stop any execution) then hopefully will know something soon....

???? was Cl...MyM.. part of "MacKeep.." ..... memory fails me, but never remember downloading CMMac ...... txs

Should have done a hard power down rather than trusting the "Finder - Restart" . System gets to a black screen with only the cursor showing, but even 3 mins doesn't continue process.... will patiently wait several more cycles, then hard power down... Will run Systems Test after successful Power Up and post
