Wrist detection question

Hello all,

I haven't even received my watch yet (coming on Tuesday) and I'm kind of getting ahead of myself here, but bear with me, I'm a "what if" kind of guy, lol...

I have a tattooed left arm/ wrist (where the watch is going to go) and I see this "tattoo gate" nonsense.

Now, I understand that you can turn off wrist detection (we don't have Apple Pay here in the UK at the moment anyway) however I was wondering what happens when a notification comes through?

As I understand it when you get a notification and the watch is on (with wrist detection enabled) it will come through to the watch primarily and the won't alert the phone. But what happens if wrist detection is off, will the watch still receive notifications or will it start defaulting to the phone again or will it alert both the phone and watch at the same time?

2nd question... with wrist detection off what's to stop the stand up reminders coming through when the watch is off and charging at the end of the day.

So when u got the notification on both devices (the watch and iphone) did your phone light up showing the lock screen with the notification and did your watch vibrate or make a sound showing u got the notification to it as well

Basically this is Hardware issue, if can not be detact in  diagnostics then probably wrist detaction sensor ( back side of watch ) need multiple gentle squeeze and finger taps eveywhere on the sensor which might be stuck due to sweat or dust so try to remove the dust and press it. It should work again !

PS:- no need to waste your time to reset the  watch !

i believe 2 things will happen if wrist detection is off

1) you will need to tap on the watch to get the screen to light up - it wont light up when you raise your wrist

2) i dont think you will be able to set a passcode which means - Im not sure if alerts will still come up on the watch automatically without wrist detection

a) Apple pay wont work - but that doesnt seem to be a problem

b) with a psscode the watch locks itself when removed from your wrist and you have to enter a passcode once you put it back on - so that wont apply

there may be other things - the Apple watch guide is available from support.apple.com (or maybe support.apple.co.uk)

its also possible your tattoo wont be a problem - you might wait until you actually get the watch and check

Ibelieve the raise wrist should still work, doesn't that just use the accelerometer?

the Apple watch app implies this only works when wrist detection is enabled - i tried to turn it off to test it but it said it would delete all my credit cards in Apple pay on the watch so i ddint try the experiment

With passcode off the display still lights up when you lift your wrist and you still receive notifications. With wrist detection on it states the display will illuminate when you raise your wrist, this sort of implies it won't when it's off, when you do turn it off it says that lock and some activity monitoring will not work.

Do you mean with wrist detection off the wrist raise will still work?

EDIT: Just found this http://9to5mac.com/2015/05/01/apple-watch-tattoos-apple/ confirms that wrist raise should still work with wrist detection off.

What exactly is pausing the workout... Is it due to the heart rate sensor being on or is it wrist detection?Does the workout pause automatically if it senses you are stopped or is is pausing because it thinks it's not on the wirst?

Yes with wrist detection off the display still illuminates when the wrist is raised.

So I got my watch about a week ago and I have tattoos on my wrists as well. I had to turn Wrist Detection off due to my ink. The only things I've noticed being affected is Stand in the Activity app as well as not being able to have Apple Pay due to no passcode on my Watch. I havent used the Workout app yet but I'm hoping nothing is effected inside it.

I have tattoos too and when I turn wrist detection off notifications comes on both watch and iphone (first iphone and after 2 seconds watch). Is the same with you?

Yes, I get them on both. But with Wrist Detection On, I wasn't always receiving the notifications on my Watch and it constantly was asking for my passcode most likely because it couldn't detect that I was wearing my watch, due to my ink.
