OS X Photos App: Remove Already Imported from iOS Device

In the switch from iPhoto to Photos I am looking to find some of the functionality from the old program that has gone missing. I used to sync my iPhone with my MacBook Pro and upon finishing have the option to remove the already imported photos from my iPhone. Now I do not have that option or anything similar that I can tell. I cannot even select them all and delete them from my MacBook Pro. I am left either importing them again (which creates duplicates) just to delete them automatically, or I have to do it by hand.

I cannot understand why such a useful feature (Removing Items that had already been automatically imported by iCloud) has been removed.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I hate that I now have additional steps to take when iPhoto used to handle this so well. It seems shortsighted to remove this feature in a program that you are forcing folks to use..

What does"underpass the delete button" mean? I cannot find any delete button. Running El Cap.

That was an unfortunate typo. I meant to write "And press the delete button", but the spell checker messed it up.

There should be a toolbar at the bottom of the image Capture import window, with a button like a forbidden sign:

Do you have iOS 8.3 installed on your iPhone? And iCloud Photo Library enabled in the Setting > Photo & Camera?

Then you can no longer delete directly from the iPhone after import. That is only possible, if you disable iCloud Photo Library on the iPhone, see this discussion:

Re: Delete photos from iPhone after import - Photos

With iCloud Photo library disabled you should be seeing this checkmark in the Photos Imprt panel:

iPhone 6 Plus is 8.3, iCloud Photo Library is off.

I get the option to "Delete items after import", but this does nothing for the things automatically getting imported by Photo Stream. So even if I check the box in the picture that you've attached above I am left with all of the items that have automatically been added to my Mac already.

Tereis no substitute for this option in Photos.

However, you can delete all photos on the iPhone at once, by opening Image Capture, after you imported all photos to Photos. In Image Capture you delete all photos without importing again, or after importing to a folder for backup.

  • Connect your iPhone to USB and launch Image Capture.
  • Select the photos you want to delete and underpass the delete button.

iPhoto is well supported on MacOS X 10.10.3.

Why not continue to use iPhoto, if you prefer it? If you did not yet update to iPhoto 9.6.1, see this user tip: Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS... | Apple Support Communities

The migration to Photos left your original iPhoto library installed. When you launch iPhoto, it will open this library (with a warning that the library has been migrated - click the "Open iPhoto" button).

Create a smart album based on the capture date to identify all photos, that are newer than the date of migration. Export these photos to a folder the Finder and import from this folder to iPhoto. There is no way to downgrade a Photos library to iPhoto format; it is only one-way, from iPhoto to Photos.

I just figured it out between my iPhone and my MacBook Pro!

Here are the steps. Very easy.

Note: Make sure you imported all your images before attempting this!

1. Plug your phone into your MacBook laptop and wait for the Image Capture to load.

2. Under devices, select iPhone and then go to Edit menu -> Select All.

3. Hit the Delete icon in red color in front of the "Import To:" word. That's it.

Right, this used to work very well, but if you are using iCloud Photo Library on your iPhone, there is no longer a delete button in Image Capture, because the photos are in iCloud and not on your iPhone.

The iPhone will show with a cloud icon in the sidebar, if you cannot delete from the iPhone.

When I disable iCloud Photo Library on my iPhone, the delete button will appear:

Thanks Leonie for your words of wisdom!

How to run the Image Capture ? I'm in some sort of loop right now, because images are being imported by photo's into to cloud prior to connecting the phone to imac. Normally, this is great (automagically!)

But still cannot find a delete button that works after the import has taken place already.

Please advice!
