OS X Photos App: Remove Already Imported from iOS Device

In the switch from iPhoto to Photos I am looking to find some of the functionality from the old program that has gone missing. I used to sync my iPhone with my MacBook Pro and upon finishing have the option to remove the already imported photos from my iPhone. Now I do not have that option or anything similar that I can tell. I cannot even select them all and delete them from my MacBook Pro. I am left either importing them again (which creates duplicates) just to delete them automatically, or I have to do it by hand.

I cannot understand why such a useful feature (Removing Items that had already been automatically imported by iCloud) has been removed.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I hate that I now have additional steps to take when iPhoto used to handle this so well. It seems shortsighted to remove this feature in a program that you are forcing folks to use..

DannyLDN, look at jasonhawaii's post in this discussion: Re: OS X Photos App: Remove Already Imported from iOS Device

It describes pretty well, how to delete already imported photos from your iPhone when you launch Image Capture - this app is in your Applications folder. Look for an app with an icon like this.

The name of the app may be different, depending on your language settings in the system preferences.

TThis is so stupid. I have been dealing with this for hours. I shouldn't have to do this. I hate that iphoto had this but this doesn't. It's not like it's a bug that they will fix. This is a lack of feature.

I don't want to go back to iPhoto. iPhoto is not supported and will not be updated. Photos should have this.

This frustrates a lot of people and you are not alone. I Deal with this daily with new converts I train. Many of them Cannot revert back to iPhoto as they had not updated to the last version so it is now greyed out with a white circle and slash. They have difficulty enough with the new look and feel, especially the older users less willing to deal with change, so trying to take them over to Image Capture for a multistep process to accomplish what last week only took a click on a button in the same app is sort of making the Apple experience and simplicity MIA.

Finder does not reveal my iphone.

The Finder will not show the newer mobile devices, because Apple does not want you to access the files directly using the Finder. This is to prevent you from accessing protected media files directly. To download from an iPhone or iPad you need to launch an application, either Photos, Aperture, or Image Capture.

My screenshot are from Image Capture. This application may have a different name on your Mac. It is called differently depending on the primary system language of your Mac. Look for this icon in the Applications folder:

The white circle and slash on the icon should not matter, if iPhoto has been purchased from the AppStore or came preinstalled. As long as iPhoto is showing on the Purchases tab of the App Store you can update by reinstalling:

Reinstall as described in this User Tip:

Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS... | Apple Support Communities

The main idea is to move the incompatible iPhoto app to the Trash, so Spotlight does not see it as installed, reload the App Store by pressing ⌘R, and then to try to download again from the App Store - from your Purchases tab, not from the main page, since you can neither buy iPhoto nor update it, but you can reinstall, if your AppleID is associated with it.

So move iPhoto to the Trash (don't empty the Trash), relaunch the App Store. The button to the right if iPhoto should change to Install on the "Purchases" tab.

If you do not see iPhoto there, try to unhide your Purchases as described on this page: Hide and unhide purchases in the Mac App Store - Apple Support

This makes no sense to me either, I used to be able to do it. I can't remember if there was a delete all photos option (but only once I imported everything) or if I had to check delete after importing then reimport everything and ignore duplicates.

But the ignore duplicates option seems to be gone now, at least I imported a few photos that I know were in there and it didn't ask.

And I can never remember image capture becuase I only need it for odd things, like tell it not to launch Photos every time I insert a device and stuff like this....

The screenshot above is from the Image Capture application.

To import from an iPhone you can either use one of the photo library applications Photos, iPhoto, Aperture, or use Image Capture, that comes with every Mac.

My post before this (Re: OS X Photos App: Remove Already Imported from iOS Device) is showing screenshots both from Photos and from Image Capture.

I hate that the "delete imported photos" option is gone. I used to plug in my phone, import my photos and then choose "delete imported photos" (or not). Now I don't have that option. I have to go back to my phone (or camera) and delete them. Whey they did away with this option is beyond me. it was a useful function and I would like to see it come back in the next update. Having to go back to my camera, go into the DCIM folder, delete the photos, empty the trash, and then remove the camera from my computer is a pain in the - - -.

Does anyone at apple relieze how much you are killing your sales and business by doing things like this.

One shouldn't need two apps or more to delete photo's, the "delete photo's after import" check box is gone and apple is not supporting Iphoto's. After using photo's migrating library's back is another annoying learning curve.

More annoyed by my apple products as time goes on, and apple doesn't listen so I'm slowly moving away as an overall solution.
