Fans crazy, Accountsd and Securityd hogging CPU

Hi everyone.

Since 10.10.3, my fans have started going off and I've noticed significant performance losses. Activity Monitor tells me that Accountsd and Securityd takes up at least 75% and 12% of CPU, respectively. I've also noticed that I need to revalidate my google account (2-step activation) in system preferences at least twice a day, so I'm suspecting that the two issues are related.

I've tried deleting ~/Library/Accounts/Accounts3.sqlite, but to no avail. Does anyone know what to do about it? If I restart, the problems disappear for awhile and then resurfaces.

Cheers,

/JanOnDemand

Try a SMC reset. The article covers when this is required, but doing this will not affect anything.

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read.

Etrecheck – System Information

May 5, 2015 2:03 PM in response to JanOnDemand

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

May 6, 2015 2:02 PM in response to Eric Root

I am seeing the 'securityd' and 'accountsd' CPU hog issue as well. I have been seeing severe slow downs recently and this is the closest I have found that makes sense to the symptoms I am seeing. I have had my system freeze (cursor still moves) for minutes at a time and then suddenly spring back to life. Another symptom is click and wait several seconds for a result. Type and wait several seconds for text to appear.

Here are my etrecheck results. Any help will be appreciated.

May 6, 2015 6:25 PM in response to JanOnDemand

I have the same problem. It's been plaguing me since 10.10.3, my battery life went from 8 hours to 3-4. My fans run like crazy and I have to restart every 3 hours or so. I've tried searching about this everyday and I've followed Linc Davis's solutions on many different support pages but to no avail.

I have 15inch RMBP mid-2014. I'm really praying on 10.10.4 fixing this because I can't operate like this, I want to throw my computer out lol.

May 7, 2015 1:03 AM in response to JanOnDemand

Have any of you others that are experiencing this problem one or more google accounts configured in "Internet Accounts"? Does it keep asking you to enter your password again?

My problems aren't constant. They seem to randomly appear and disappear. Often when internet accounts want me to enter the password again, it's as if the processes have given up on whatever it was that they were doing and relaxes. After inputting my password they stay calm for an hour or two, then they start running full blast again. It's possible that the problems are connected to mail.app in some way, but it's almost impossible to know for sure.

Oh, and here are my EtreCheck results:

Im having the same issue as everyone else here. "accountsd" hogging almost all resources in activity monitor on my 2014 mbp 13' retina (Was getting scalding hot and eating through battery). Started with the 10.10.3 update and constant requests on all my machines to enter the passwords for my 2 google accounts. Removing both my google accounts on the MacBook and using iCloud mail instead "fixed" the issue. It is urgent that apple fix this. For reference ALL my apple devices (pads.phones, laptop, desktop) experienced the google password request issue everyday until I verified all devices online with Google in the accounts section. I no longer get the password requests, but accountsd persists until I delete both gmail accounts. My guess is that all this is happening because Google clamped down on account security several weeks ago and apple changed the way email is verified in 10.10.3 (see the new email accounts password entry screen for an example of this), either way on of the worst bugs I've ever seen apple put out. Just terrible.

Fans crazy, Accountsd and Securityd hogging CPU
