MIME plug-in (video/x-ms-asf-plugin) and .mpkg files

I navigate to the site "www.djtiesto.com" and get the following error message.

The page “Tiësto” has content of MIME type “video/x-ms-asf-plugin”. Because you don’t have a plug-in installed for this MIME type, this content can’t be displayed.

I am using a MacBook with OSX 10.4.8 and have updated all of the software. I have tried to install Flip4Mac and have run into an issue where I am not able to install .mpkg files. The installer application in the Utilities folder will not open the downloaded program.

I would like to find out 2 things.

1. How to open .mpkg files on a MacBook running 10.4.8 when the Intaller program in the Utilities folder will not do it.

2. Is there another option (other than Flip4Mac) to run Windows Media through Safari

Thank you.

Hi Andrew,

Welcome to Apple Discussions

How to open .mpkg files on a MacBook running 10.4.8 when the Intaller program in the Utilities folder will not do it.

Go to the Utilities folder and single click on the Installer.app. Next, apple key + I to bring up the application's info. panel. There are 3 areas to check and possibly correct:
Plug-ins - make sure all items are selected
Languages - make sure all are selected
Permissions - "read and write".

Is there another option (other than Flip4Mac) to run Windows Media through Safari

Flip4Mac is the sole Universal Binary substitute for Windows Media on the Mac.

The site in question has quite a bit of Flash and Java content. Go to your Safari Preferences>Security and make sure all boxes under web-content are selected. If not, select them and restart Safari. Try the site.

Please post back.

Thank you for your help.

I followed your directions and checked the Information for the Installer program (plug-ins - all were selected / languages - there were none listed / permissions - read and write was selected) and I was still unable to open .mpkg files. I am trying to install the Flip4Mac program on my MacBook (which dowloads as a .mpkg file). Just to let you know, I had no problem installing it on my PowerBook G4.

I also checked the Safari preferences and all items under web-content were already checked except "block pop-up windows". I selected that, so all 4 items were selected, and then re-booted the laptop. Unfortunately I still have the same problem with the Tiesto site.

Sorry this did not work. Are there any other options?

Try this: reapply the 10.4.8 combined update, then, "repair permissions using Disk Utility in your Utilities folder after the install/restart. This may resolve the "flash" problem.

Installer - Single click on any .mpkg file (use spotlight to find one if necessary), and again apple key + I to bring up the info panel. "Open with" ought to say Installer.app. If it doesn't, select the drop down menu and navigate to it. Then, "change all" on the info panel.
