If you are trying to activate an iPad or iPhone and it is asking for the original owners Apple ID and password, you have encountered the Activation Lock. This is a security feature that prevents thieves from setting up and using a stolen or lost iPad or iPhone. You have no alternative. No must contact the original owner to get permission to use the device. If you cannot contact the original owner return the device to where you bought it and get a refund. You will never be able to activate the device and no one can help you do it.

Yes people sell their stuff all the time. You can sell an iOS device to someone else as long as you properly erase it before selling them, so the new owner can activate it without any issues. Pawn shops really don't give a rat's behind if the device was erased correctly or not. You get what you get when you buy from a pawn shop.

With Find My iPhone Activation Lock, your Apple ID and password will be required before anyone can:

  • Turn off Find My iPhone on your device
  • Erase your device
  • Reactivate and use your device

I Copied that text from here.

Obviously, you did no research on this site before posting your question. This has been discussed over and over and over again since iOS 7 was released. Take the iPad back to the pawn shop and ask for a refund. The pawn shop owner will not be able to get in touch with the previous owner. For all that you know or the pawn shop owner knows, the device could be stolen.

I want to thank everyone who took the time to reply. Sigh... alas.... I had to return the lovely ipad air to the pawn shop. Usually they have the person sign out of their apple Id. but not this time. It was a very reasonable price and a 64 gig....

Oh well.... I am low on funds right now, and cannot afford the Big Bucks. I love my first generation, but it just can't accept any new apps. My Imac decided to have the SECOND Video card go within a year, and to replace what first cost me around three hundred, now is considered VINTAGE and a video card will cost 800. for just the part. I really don't like being forced to buy something new... or hear snorts from my relative say... "ya paid over 2000 for that mac. I bought my windows comp. at the same time, and I don't have to go buy a new one...Seems there were lots of problems with this video card which I did not know the last time I had it fixed. I am not even a heavy user. Just email, music, web browsing and occasional movie.....

Too bad... but thanks again everyone !!

See if you mac will work in safe mode. Safe mode may will avoid using hardware video. Don't know how a none working video card in the machine will effect things. Find the forum for your machine. Should be cheaper cards on ebay these days.

You may have a problem with the video chip.

Here is how to tell...

Shutdown your machine. Hold down the shift key. Poweron. Bootup will be longer.

Wait awhile while you harddrive is being checked.

An article on how to boot into safe mode.

Runs OK in safe mode...

Running in Safe mode leaves out some video drivers. Which results in your machine not using advanced video hardware. As luck would have it, you can run the safe mode video drivers in normal mode.

Here is how:

Look through the above thread. See the second page. You don't have to read through the first page. Just go to the part where I try a solution that works.

Using the safe mode video driver results in these limitiations:

-- OpenGL acceleration is not supported on this mac

-- Your mac lacks quartz extreme acceleration

Summary of G5 problems. Includes instructions on a hardware fix for the brave at heart:

See -Rotten Apple- articles in both of these threads.

Demo,

You are absolutely right . Sorry, as all I did was google my question and this site came up.

I am in my 70's, never grew up with computers and as one of my friends had one of the first home macintosh, I wanted to start out with them.

The pawn shop I went to does a background check with the serial number and also gives a cash back after 7 days, or ins store for 30. They took the ipad air back and instead gave me a 4th generation w/rd,(for almost nothing ) which Apple store say's is all up to par, andI am enjoying very much. Although I did like my first gen. very much.

Sometimes circumstance causes us not to be able to take a new mac off the shelf. I live in a city known for computer and online stuff, so what is at the pawn shops is quite amazing.

Again I thank all who took the time to help, and hope that your kindness will be repaid.

And now I feel like a crud bucket for responding the way that I did. I made a totally incorrect assumption that I had no right to make about your situation. For that, I apologize. I had no right to come off the way that I did with you.

I am so happy to hear that the pawn shop took the iPad back and set you up with another iPad that is activation lock free. Believe me, I understand the financial situation about not being able to grab the latest and greatest devices off of the shelf without having to worry about the cost. Money isn't exactly falling out of my pockets these days. I don't have the disposable income that I had just a few short years ago. BTW, I love that term...disposable income. I NEVER had disposable income. 😁

I'm glad that it all worked out for you and I wish you all the best. Enjoy your new iPad!

Dear Demo ,

'GET OUT OF THAT BUCKET !! However I am going to steal your expression. "Crud bucket"... cracked me up.!!

Takes courage to apologize in public, Kudos. Accepted... although I know that sometimes what seems so obvious to me, may not be in someone else's shoes.

I live in Seattle where there seems to be a lot of money all around...(probably where that term D.I.. came from ).Microsoft , Amazon, to name only a couple . I learned that you are right. That most pawn shops don't give refunds or in store credit once it is out the door. But the big chain (cash america) does . I was quite amazed with a lot of the rather new stuff they had in there, and there are se veral around the city. They said several guys come in almost every day looking for mac products, buy them and then turn around and sell them on Amazon (duh ) and Craigslist and sometimes double their price. ....So, I have a week to have a week for my apple guys to check it out and return it or 30 days in store credit. A few years ago I bought all of my mac stuff at once, and now they are all conking out at once...like you , not quite as flush as before...

Better times ahead, and thanks again .
