iPhone 6 Plus Car Play no longer works

I believe I've nailed down a bug. And I can only confirm it with Apple iPhone 6 Plus.

Issue: If you Reset your iPhone 6 Plus, your device will no longer work with Apple Car Play (more specifically the Alpine ilx-007).

Brief: I bought the Alpine ILX-007 to use with my iPhone 6. At first it worked alright, but every 15 to 20 minutes or so it would disconnect, it would drop calls, or just not work. Unplugging it and plugging it back into the USB sometimes fixed the issue, but it was always a temporary fix. Consulting with the stereo manufacturer, they advised that I reset my iPhone. Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Doing so wiped everything and returned me to a "stock" iphone. When I plugged in the iPhone this time, I got an instant pop up (paraphrasing) "This USB device is not supported". I went from being able to connect to Car Play but not having it work properly, to not being able to connect at all, whatsoever. At the shop we plugged in two other iPhones, a 5 and another 6 plus and both of them worked with car play.

Full story below;

I went home and did a restore to a previous backup (to no avail), and then I did another reset, but neither fixed the issue. From then on, I could only get the "USB device not supported" message whenever I plugged in that phone.

I returned the phone to the Apple store. They swapped my phone on the spot and I got a new iPhone 6 plus (thanks!). I downloaded two songs to test out the head unit when I returned to my car and car play worked 100% just fine.

I returned home to restore my phone and data from a backup and iTunes went from 8 minutes to restore, to 40 minutes, to 8 hours. It hung at 8 hours and didn't budge. I only had 500 songs to sync. I removed my phone from the computer and restarted it. Nothing out of the ordinary it worked fine. But because it was restoring and got hung, I decided to wipe it back to stock via Reset, just to be sure there wasn't going to be any issues. After resetting the phone, I plugged it back into the computer, synced all of my songs back to the phone no problem. Excited, I ran back to my car and plugged it in... "This USB device is not supported".

Looking back, the only thing that happened both times was the phone was Reset. I thought about the incomplete restore possibly causing an issue, but everything other than car play works fine AND when I did the original reset, there was no restoration involved. All I did was reset the phone.

I believe a driver, or some file or something that is necessary for Car Play does not get restored when you Reset your phone. Everything other than Car Play seems to be working just fine.

I could go back to the apple store, say its not working again and possibly get another swap, but I don't wish to waste more phones, nor do I want to have to hope that I never need to reset or wipe my phone in order to enjoy music in my car. So as of right now, I have an iPhone 6 that works well (outside of car play) and a brand new $800 head unit that only lets me listen to the radio 😝

Please look into this, I really wanted car play to work and enjoy my phone and car synchronization but at this point I'm frustrated and disappointed to be honest. I'm posting this bug to help keep other customers from ending up in this same situation, and hopefully you all can find and fix the problem.

Thanks for your time, hope to hear back.

At last!

Apple advisor suggested connecting in airplane mode. This appears to work. switch airplane mode off and after a minute or so it would drop out again. Reconnect, again in airplane mode it works. Switch Air mode off and wait; goes off again, what I did notice was that the VPN switch clicks over at exactly the same time as the unit drops out. Go into settings<General> VPN configuration and the profile user is Onavo which has a VPN 'Connect on demand' switch. Keep this switched off and it seems to do the trick (Onavo is an App that purports to save mobile data usage when not connected to wifi)

Guys any news on this? Got my Passat FTE yesterday with carplay on board, dealer told me the latest firmware was on the infotainment system. The salesperson hooked his iPhone on in the showroom and it worked flawlessly, after that we tried with my iPhone6, it didnt work, i had to reboot the iphone6, after that i got a popup 1 time accept carplay on this iPhone, i accepted it, and bang it worked.... for 10 seconds, after that it never paired again, did a reboot of both, a complete reset of the iPhone, use as new iPhone, still could not get it paired up... the VW dealer here in the netherlands said, call apple support. I did, took the case, pointing to maybe a faulty cable, they ship me one over asap, but i doubt that is the case to fix it. When this does not work, my iPhone6 case will be escalated to the third tier support desk of apple, and the carplay support and development team they say. When i checked youtube on carplay, my jaw dropped.. so many people are having issues with carplay, why is this? And i now start to think, is it worth all the hassle? Is it that great? And if not, who in the **** did they make this crappy decision on making such a faulty piece of software for the automotive industry... the automotive industry is de biggest laggard of the whole Audio Video industry... i totally do not understand why car brands do still make their own infotainment systems, to make money right.. sure.. but a SmartPhone is way more advanced than a car infotainment system will ever be, so why does apple burn its fingers this way by supporting this faulty stuff? Anyone?

Well maybe it is just a setting i missed, does any one have the golden tip to make Carplay work? Im running ios9.2 on a iPhone6 and im trying to connect to a Discover Pro Volkswagen system... i cannot get it to work, it still does not work.

I have had the same problem. Initially, iPhone 6S would not connect with CarNet. USB has NEVER worked in Mirrorlink. Firstly, there is the issue of registering the car within 90 days of purchase [I wasn't told this]. You will need an account number from the web and a chassis number of the car.[Enabling data transfer is usually done from Menu - set-up which is not the issue as far as I can see]. If you phone helpline there are two numbers but here is one 0800 0833 914 and this is the customer service number. I had real problems at one end registering on the website as it would not reset easily. Eventually, I also discovered the car internet want to connect TO your phone and NOT the other way around! The VW customer services will give you a case number until the case is solved. When you receive an email from the VW Carnet Portal you can register the code in the car for 48hrs or refresh. [I had to delete the original set-up to succeed here! switch off wifi - reset password too - unregister car too] That was ONE problem solved and I got a Car Net account via email! Car Net appears to occasioanally recoginise my phone now but it it is confuses by my iPod bluetoothed for music too! I have tried hotspotting my EE 4G device in the car and this also appears to be recognised. HOWEVER, the USB connection and Mirrorlink software FAILS! The iPhone 6S is NOT recognised at all? So I cannot access apps on the NavPro screen. Car Net app is useless and keeps saying 'timed out' when I have never connected! So...I will be phone 'Jane' on Monday with the latest issues with bated breath.

I have a Pioneer SPH-DA120 which works on all CarPlay functions just fine with my wife's iPhone 5, my daughter's iPhone 6 and my son in law's iPhone 5s, however with my iPhone 6 it works great on all functions except it will not for some reason download the phone contact list (phonebook) to allow me to make calls. I can answer calls and the caller name & number displays as you would expect, but every time I touch the phone icon it opens with a blank list, if I then touch "show contacts" it goes straight back to the home screen. If I connect through bluetooth it works fine but obviously no CarPlay available. I have tried resetting my phone to factory settings and re-installing my contacts and apps etc from the cloud but it made no difference, anyone I have tried to get advice from says switch on Siri but I have done this and also checked all the settings compared with the other phones that I mentioned and can see no difference other than the fact that my contact list is much larger than the others, does anyone know if that can cause a problem or have any other advice to offer??? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am running the latest iOS version.

I have discovered tonight from a Skoda - Seat mechanic that a blue-red connection to USB and updated software is needed for 2015 May 5 weeks old VW Passat with NavPro gear! VW deny this saying it cannot be done!? I will be tackling Customer Care and HQ on this shortly but for all those irate customers out there who have bought a 2015 VW Passat E6 engine [no emission problems] BUT HAVE issues with Mirrolink and USB etc., and have been spending needless hours trying to make things work - here is the definitive answer!

Guys i went to the VW dealer nearby, they looked at the system, checked the latest firmware version, it was the latest version. They hooked up an other iphone 6S and it worked like a charm, hooked up my iphone6 to check if it worked, and as expected, it didn't work.... VW mechanic went to talk to some other colleagues and he came back telling me that the car and the Discover Pro2 unit worked perfectly fine. The problem is my iphone6 and that is that, consult apple support they told me they must help you on this one, VW done all they can.

it is up to apple support now 100%. I had to nudge them because i didn't hear from them for over 2 weeks. The support guy i got on looked at my case and said, apples corporate engineering are looking into it. Be patient Mr.

AFter 2 days i got an email, with the question if i had an MSExchange account on my iphone and if i had one to delete it, hard reset my iphone6 and try it again..

I emailed him back, telling him that i recently had reset the iphone as a new iphone, that intol them already, so no backup and totally clean of any emailaccount...

i tested it anyway, deleting the msexchange account, but you can already guess it, again it does not work.

So now i am 23 hours of testing down the road, frustration levels reaching boiling point. Apple does not have an answer yet,

Proof is there, Apple does totally not care to solve this case quickly. i asked the support guy if when it cannot be fixed i do get a refund or swap or anything, that COULD be the case but only after Apple has done everything they can to solve it, could take a year the guy said!!

what do you guys think of this? A phone costing 800€ a car that costs 48750€, and a feature they sell and do so much marketing for just does not work... Carplay does not work for me

I Must wait and see, the shear waste of time spent is appalling, Shame on Apple support, selling the most expensive devices yet not making it work

i Hope someone can help me, and if you also have this problem of not getting carplay to work in your car, please let us know here.

Gah! This is my problem too. I have a Pioneer 8100NEX and I was so thrilled when their firmware update last year allowed CarPlay to work. The Bluetooth connection was always pretty fussy, but I could usually get it to behave. Then after the last iPhone update (9.2.1), Bluetooth in CarPlay stopped working completely. When I plug in the USB so my phone can communicate with the head unit, I lose the BT connection and cannot get it back, no matter what I do. I've tried all sorts of things on my side--cold boot on the phone, fiddling with the settings on the head unit, attempting to reinstall the firmware update, and nothing.

Feb 25, 2016 7:34 AM in response to reivaxtilburg

ok here we go, UPDATE! THE SOLUTION

Tested 2 other iphones, a 5 and another 6, both work instantly! Carplay booted up immediately, no waiting no extra fiddling around with bluetooth on or off.

Made a picture of both iPhones working with the Discover Pro2.

Called Apple Support in stead of waiting it out for them to call me, Senior advisor, told me, dear sir, you've done everything you possibly could to fix the issue, it still does not work, so we narrowed it down to most possibly a hardware issue with your particular iPhone6, we are sorry for the inconvenience and therefore we grant you a swap at one of our Retail Stores in the Netherlands.

Hopefully this ends my case of an iPhone6 not working with carplay on a VW Discover pro2 unit.

if any of you want to know the steps to take to get this swap, be a DIE HARD and do not take NO for an answer. Do not consult VW, but consult APPLE support for a fix and do not wait for IOS updates in this case, logically hardware issues cannot be solved this way

#backwardcompatibility Phones and operating systems are WAY ahead development cyclewise.

SOLUTION CONFIRMED!!!!!

Apple swapped my iPhone6 today for a new iPhone6.

Connected it to the Discovery Pro2 system USB1 and ot works now.

i use carplay for playing podcasts like A state of Trance and Hardwell On Air & Jordy Dazz

The sound quality via Carplay is amazing.

So end good all good.

for any of you struggling with an iPhone that does not want to connect to Carplay, do not hesitate and SWAP your iPhone immediately.

Yes sad but true, they are working on a bluetooth connection still but the automotive industry is way slower than modern smartphone developers, VW especially, their CarNet app is buggy and slow as well. After market car audio devices are also way ahead of Carplay solutions. They have the advantage of not working with the roadmap of an official production car. Personally i find it strange that these days you still cannot buy a car that is configureable with your type of smartphone dock or iPad or Tablet dock, so that the ipad or smartphone becomes your cardisplay, car manufacturers would only need to provide a built-in universal amplifier. I think it has to do with the extra profit they would lose if this was the case. Car manufacturers Audio units are insanely expensive compared to the actual cost of the hardware...

Thank God I stumbled upon this thanks for the heads up I really appreciate it ! I just had my unit installed yesterday omg I love it well worth the 800 bucks. Now if iPhone would use google maps app I'd me much more happier. iTunes maps Omg takes me somewhere else every tin I use it. I am a traveler because I am a homecare nurse and use Google maps a lot wished Apple would reconsider using google maps or for Godsake FIX the iTunes maps so I don't wind up in BFE trying to find the correct way to get to my destination! Any advice on this issue would certainly be appreciated Thank you .
