How do you rename JPG within the Photos app?

Hi, i'm sure this must be simple but I can't find out how to do it?

It used to be really simple in iPhoto.

So yeah, how do you rename your photos/JPG's within the new Photos application?

Cheers.

As clearly answered in this thread that is not possible with Photos (and was not possible with iPhoto either) - you can export the photos with a different file name using the export options and use the exported photo

and you can set your cameras to use different fiel names so you can separate the photos by their file names - read your Canon manuals for specific capabilities and directions for your cameras

Well as I say I could do it easily in iPhoto.

That's nuts so I have to export all my photos & rename the file them import them back into Photos for Mac?

Absolute madness.

Thanks for your help anyway.

No you could not - in iPhoto it was not possible to change the file name of a photo - you may have changed the title - which as I posted you can do in Photos using the info window - but you did not change the file name - that can only be done during export - there is no possible way to do that

I used to just double click on the file name in IPhoto & retype the new name.

What may be confusing you is that if a photo has no title, iPhoto displays the filename instead. If you change the displayed filename in iPhoto, you are actually giving the photo a title, not changing its filename.

They are two different things. Titles are a part of the file itself. Filenames are a part of the file system that stores the file.

Because different file systems have different restrictions on what can be used as filenames, filenames are not necessarily "portable," meaning they may need to be changed when copying a file from one file system to another. Titles are highly portable because they are stored inside the file according to various widely accepted standards (like Exif & IPTC) that all modern image apps understand.

If you would like to give your untitled photos titles that include all or part of their filenames, you may find the Automator services & Applescripts in the Photos User Tips area useful.

OT your chart comparing iPhoto and Photos is amazing and seems to show while they expanded editing (big deal), there are a lot of things they took away. And while I didn't understand the file name v. title name, iPhoto made it much easier to change it/them. I'm trying to get the hang of the new organizing system. What is moments? I see it when I'm browsing my computer files to upload a picture.

My second question is about events. Does Photos do away with that and I just have them from iPhoto? I like event titles, not just dates. Is there anyway to do this without creating more albums?

Thanks for all your wisdom and patience. I appreciate it.

Rereading my question about events, this may not be clear. In iPhoto, I never left just the date, but gave every event a title and it helped in my organizing and finding photos (I have thousands of pictures a year - I have 11 grandkids). The Photos has the events from iPhoto, but now Photo just lumps all the photos from a date together and won't let me separate them or add an event name. Is there anyway I can organize by event without making a bunch of albums? And does it degrade the quality of a photo the more it is duplicated as a file?

Thanks! Now i have discovered the sidebar and it's extremely helpful! My only quibble is that Photo took away the ability to add a name/rename photos on a date, just separates by location. But my grandkids play sports and I always titled by opposing team such as "Marble Falls bb," but now it will show our town and date for those photos and all games played at our town. Thanks.

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there was a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N. Name it as desired. It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

The downside to the simulation is that the Albums/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can also be sorted manually, either in the sidebar or in the folder's window at the right.
