Very slow iMac - have run Etrecheck

Have an iMac that has started to run very slowly. Sluggish and long response times (1-5 seconds) on many apps.

iMac (21.5 inch, Mid 2011)

Processor 2.8 GHz, Intel Core i7

Memory 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Running OSX 10.10.3

All apps are updated.

Have run Etrecheck a few times. The iMac is slow even right after reboot. But it takes a few hours before it really starts to get bad. The check I ran below is after almost a full day since last reboot. And the list of processes and launch daemons that have been killed or have failed is looong.

I would be very grateful for advice on this.

'Quit' temporarily, not 'uninstall'. Use the gear wheel on the DropBox menu to rule it out.

In my experience, DropBox is rock-solid and is not going to be the cause of Safari using excessive memory. This symptom is invariably due to third-party plug-ins and extensions particularly Java. So,

Safari > Preferences... > Extensions

and then move the slider to 'Off'. Also, use the Java control panel:

Apple > System Preferences... > Security

and uncheck 'Enable Java content in the browser'.

I've been away for awhile so testing and checking has been intermittent.

But have now tried the following:

(1) quit Dropbox (just quit the app) and run machine for a couple of days. Seems OK. - so I followed another suggestion I got: unlink Dropbox account, clear all Dropbox caches, relink Dropbox account. This seems to have helped as I have now been running Dropbox again for a few days with no hangs. I'm no where near the file count that Dropbox support suggests might start slowing things down (300 000 - I'm at 90 000).

(2) Disabled Java - only website I use that needs it has launched an alternative, so I don't need it anymore. And Safari also seems to be running fine now.

I just ran another diagnostic check and have posted the results on pastebin: http://pastebin.com/qLLa4yXx

The machine seems to be working fine now - no beachballs,

Thanks!
