Office upgrade to 14.5.0 as of May 12, 2015

This new update to Office for Mac 2011 can be fatal. Once installed, I can no longer open an Outlook window for e-mail, contacts, etc.

After 3 hours on the phone with MicroSoft, they admitted that the update is flawed. Right now they have no fix.

I WOULD URGENTLY RECOMMEND TO NOT INSTALL MS OFFICE UPDATE VERSION 14.5.0.

Has anyone else experienced this and survived with their Outlook in tact?

It worked - thank you so much! As a recap, here's what I did:

Closed Outlook

Opened Terminal, and typed following two commands (first one took several seconds, then the second one was very fast):

defaults delete com.microsoft.Outlook

killall cfprefsd

Then I restarted Outlook and the main window appeared. There was a dialog box about adding an account or importing, but I just closed it because everything was right where it was supposed to be.

THANK YOU!

Thank You! I did nothing about this problem until I saw your Terminal command line instructions. Worked like a charm. And when Outlook's screen came up asking if I wanted to import content, I just closed that window and everything was back to normal - the main mail window was restored and all the content was intact. Thanks again! John

Yes, I would like also to sat thanks re Terminal command fix. I was a little nervous using this Utilities feature, but followed exact instructions and my Outlook screen is back, as are all my emails, folders, etc. Everything seems to where it is, the only difference I think is that my sub folders within my Inbox, seem to be collapsed on opening up Outlook. It only takes a click on the arrow for them to be displayed, hardly a biggy. This fix literally takes a minute.

By the way I received a call back from MS technician re issue. Their temporary fix is to create a new USER Account and copy your existing USER Account contents/applications across to this New User account. I was not keen on this, seemed overkill, so declined. I was informed by technician this issue is now a known Office for Mac 14.5.0 problem and a fix /patch update should only be a few days away.

All Outlook messages, contacts, calendar items, etc (but not preferences) are stored in the ~(your home directory)/Documents/Microsoft User Data folder so by simply replacing the Microsoft Office 2011 folder in the /Applications folder from a (Time Machine) backup does not touch your messages, contacts, calendar items, etc - therefore the procedure I outlined does not affect your personal data

I am terribly relieved to hear that I am not the only one with this problem.

I updated to 14.5.0 and noticed that the Main Window disappeared and I could not get it back. I tried rebuilding the database, first - no luck. Then deleted a ton of prefs - no luck. Tried Safe Reboot - no luck. I was able to create a Test account in Outlook and that seemed to show a clean Main Window, which helped me think it was a Microsoft issue/corruption rather than a faulty typeface or something at the system level. After some tinkering with prefs and such, I got it working again late last night - only to have it wonky again this morning! Arghhh!

Outlook version 14.5.0 is terribly faulty and MS tech support has no idea how to resolve the problem. I think I will eventually make the switch to AppleMail as this is the second serious problem this year I have encountered with Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 and Microsoft Support (even after paying the ridiculously high support call fee - later reimbursed for lack of success). I just hate to make the switch with all of the archival mail I have in Outlook - I've been using Entourage and Outlook since its first release so I will miss the power of the Rules and other features that Outlook just did a bit cleaner. But I can't risk losing data again (Time Machine is too cumbersome for daily use).

I am waiting patiently for a "fix" from Microsoft as we speak.

I'm another victim of 14.5.0.gate, Microsoft's "This is for not buying a Windows PC" promotion.

This fix does work and I note somewhere that someone has also recommended ensuring you close Outlook with all your folders fully collapsed. I have managed now to open and close Outlook a number of times with folders collapsed and that does seem to wrk. I do not have the courage to test closure with any folders open.....

Same exact symptoms here. Also replicated the fix working for one invocation of Outlook only. If you close outlook, and try to reopen, you end up with the original problem. I also discovered that I could open a new email form the menu without the main window open. But my signature was corrupted. I am going to retry the fix and then delete the outlook folder in the applications folder and replace it with a 14.4.x version of outlook that I have saved from february and see it that fixes the issue.
