Office upgrade to 14.5.0 as of May 12, 2015

This new update to Office for Mac 2011 can be fatal. Once installed, I can no longer open an Outlook window for e-mail, contacts, etc.

After 3 hours on the phone with MicroSoft, they admitted that the update is flawed. Right now they have no fix.

I WOULD URGENTLY RECOMMEND TO NOT INSTALL MS OFFICE UPDATE VERSION 14.5.0.

Has anyone else experienced this and survived with their Outlook in tact?

I deleted the problem Office app, but now I can't get Office to restore from the Time Machine. I have tried a couple of different days from last weekend, but get this message: You can’t copy the item “” because its name is too long or includes characters that are invalid on the destination volume.

I am not much of a computer person, but what do I do next? Thanks!

Be sure that you delete Microsoft Office (not Outlook) from your applications folder. If you can't find it, open Finder > Preferences > Sidebar and check the box next to Applications. Now open Finder and you should see the Applications folder. Click Applications and highlight Microsoft Office 2011 and then send to trash. Next open Time Machine and you should see the same Applications folder in the sidebar of Finder. Highlight Microsoft Office 2011 and then click Restore. Be sure that you go far enough back in time to get the old version of Office. These are the steps I used to delete the faulty update and then restore from Time Machine. Hope this helps...

I'm not sure why you are getting that message. I did not delete the Outlook app prior to trying to restore it. I restored the entire Office2011 folder in Applications from the Time machine backup. The backup I used was only 1 day old.

My machine is a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012)

OSX 10.10.3 (14D136)

I hope this helps.

The terminal solution failed to work for me. I deleted the entire Microsoft Office 2011 folder (in Applications folder) and restored it from a Time Machine backup from early April to make sure I got the previous version (14.9.9) I didn't need to do anything else, it worked and was back to normal with all my folder and accounts in place.

To restore a file or folder from a Time Machine backup first so that it is highlighted. The Restore button then becomes active and it will work.

i moved from Entourage because of stability problems but am beginning to regret it now. How on earth can Microsoft push out such bad updates - they must surely know it has issues else they need to fire their whole validation team en-masse,

Good luck,

Same problem. I finally got someone at Microsoft who solved the problem after hours of being pushed around to various places by support techies. Close Outlook. While holding down the "option" key reopen Outlook. A window about user identities will open. Click the + sign in the lower left. A new identity 1 will be created. If it is highlighted like a rename situation, click elsewhere in the window so it is highlighted by a blue bar. Then select the gear option next to the minus sign and make the new identity the default. Then close and reopen Outlook. You will get a new, but blank, main window. You will then have to reestablish your accounts by going to Tools and entering the specs for your accounts. After that it will work. The techie admitted this is a widespread problem. DO NOT install version 14.5 until they issue the next update with a note that the issue is resolved.

This Outlook problem is the EXACT same issue I have after upgrading, for the past two days. It is definitely an issue that needs a permanent fix.

The Terminal solution did work but it is a repetitive, temporary fix as I had to do it again today with the start up of Outlook application. I assume it is a good way to actually have you off the client heavy application and into the cloud version of Outlook, but annoying as I haven't migrated all the folders there and of course an internet connection is always required. I guess it's time to see about migrating the whole use of Outlook to the Office 365 site so I can have a permanent, working back up instead of relying on Time Machine or other arduous backup process.

Regarding folders, most of the personal folders were moved from the previous location at Outlook start up. Don't worry, you just have to drill down into collapsed folders to find your previous personal folders. It was a "shock" for a minute or two because you're just expecting more upgrade troubles.

The fix needs to be published and permanent as the Terminal solution is helpful and does work, it shouldn't be a permanent solution. Not sure if it is necessary to do a backup or a rebuild, but I did both before using Terminal.

From David-Sk; Namely the steps:

1. Open Terminal (In Applications-> Utilities -> Terminal

2. Type: defaults delete com.microsoft.Outlook (to delete the old preferences).

3. Type: killall cfprefsd (to kill the cached prefs)

4. Launch Outlook

The pop up window will look at a new install or an import but don't do that, just press 'continue' on the bottom right side of the pop up window the intro screen and so far Outlook 2011 is opening windows.

It does have to be Repeated, at least from my experience. So, just write down the steps from David-Sk until we get a permanent fix.
