Office upgrade to 14.5.0 as of May 12, 2015

This new update to Office for Mac 2011 can be fatal. Once installed, I can no longer open an Outlook window for e-mail, contacts, etc.

After 3 hours on the phone with MicroSoft, they admitted that the update is flawed. Right now they have no fix.

I WOULD URGENTLY RECOMMEND TO NOT INSTALL MS OFFICE UPDATE VERSION 14.5.0.

Has anyone else experienced this and survived with their Outlook in tact?

I noticed that the Personal folders on my computer did not come back with anything in them although they were listed in the sidebar. I luckily had exported everything into an OLM file before I did this process and am now importing that back into Outlook. Hopefully everything comes back.

I am wondering if the new Office 2016 trial could have had anything to do with this issue. The new Outlook 2016 beta still worked but I have not been using that as my primary email since it's stability is questionable. I wonder if those that had the problem were also running the new beta Office 2016...

A reply by "tssr" did the job for me -- now Outlook is working on the pre-update version 14.4.9. Here is tssr's solution that worked for me: "If you have a (Time Machine) backup you can simply delete the newly updated Microsoft Office 2011 folder in your Applications folder and restore the whole Microsoft Office 2011 folder back to your Applications folder. This will restore v14.4.9 (or the last version you backed up) and everything will work again until Microsoft issues a fixed update."

Thanks to tssr!

Thanks to the poster of 'the Terminal hack' ( "The Terminator" ? 🙂 )- so far it's for me all back online ( for now..)

To recap, here's what I did:

Closed Outlook

Opened Terminal, and typed following two commands (first one took several seconds, then the second one was very fast):

defaults delete com.microsoft.Outlook

killall cfprefsd

Then I restarted Outlook and the main window appeared. There was a dialog box about adding an account or importing, but I just closed it because everything was right where it was supposed to be.

THANK YOU!

** Mind you, I did lose ALL of my preferences, and now have a lot of folders to re-display, thanks to that bug where the default view doesn't propagate, and date sort has to be manually applied to EVERY FOLDER :-(

That fix worked as long as I kept Outlook open. Once I quit, in order to re-open, I had to re-enter the Terminal commands (at least now I have a macro) and set all my Preferences again. I plan to keep Outlook up for a week at a time, then flush out the UNIX temp stuff. Hopefully MS will fix soon. (I do not want to restore from Time Machine--I'll lose more data that way, as I've already done quite a bit of work in 14.5.)

I installed Outlook 14.5 today on two retina Macbook Pros running Yosemite 10.10.3.

Outlook 14.5 totally failed on both of them.

On one Mac I went back to Outlook 14.4.9 (using Time Machine) and I got everything back perfectly, all personal folders etc intact.

So I'll keep using 14.4.9 on my Time Machined Mac, and do without Outlook on the other one until Microsoft issues a fix.

(Is it just me or have we had a heck of a rocky time with updates lately? Yosemite's slow Safari problem is still plaguing my Macs, plus there was the IOS 8 problem ... never be an early adopter of updates, that's what I'm realising ...)

Hit by the same issue after updating to the latest Microsoft Office 2011 security updates.

I discovered that if I launch Outlook 2011 (14.5.0 _ 150423), go to Preferences, select Accounts, and remove all of my IMAP accounts (in my case 3), and restart Outlook, the interface window re-appears.

I added the IMAP accounts back (gmail, hotmail, isp) via Preferences and discovered that upon adding a third IMAP account, the interface window problem occurs. I removed the third IMAP account that was created and had to use the Activity Monitor to "Force Quit" the Outlook "SyncServicesAgent" in order for the Outlook interface window to re-appear.

I tried different IMAP account order and it seems that the problem occurs upon the creation of the third IMAP account. If someone has POP and/or Exchange accounts, it would be worthwhile testing on a problem system to determine if it's specific to IMAP.

SIDE NOTE

I'm using the latest version of iTunes on a fully patched Yosemite on a MacBook Pro and on an iMac. I typically sync Calendar/Contacts/Notes from Outlook 2011 via iTunes. I've noticed that this is no longer working as well ... it possible that the "SyncServicesAgent" may be the culprit.

The terminal fix worked for me but needed to be redone after closing 2 times. According to Microsoft support rep, it is impacting 10.10.3 only and those who did last Safari update. The terminal fix is temporary. She told me that it usually works half hour to 4 hours and definitely an ongoing problem. She said don't close Outlook or shut down computer until they come up with permanent solution. With all the problems I have had with Outlook, I am so ready for a new email solution, but hard to find one that plays well with Exchange without losing features.
