Office upgrade to 14.5.0 as of May 12, 2015

Thank you! This worked easily, once I figured out was terminal was. (Using mac from PC only a few months.)

I switched to Mac from a PC not so long as well. I did find terminal using the finder, but now don't know where to write the command.

I have this:

Last login: Sat May 16 18:56:43 on ttys000

Ivanas-MacBook-Pro:~ ivana$

But when I press enter, it just copies the Ivana-macBook-Pro comand

what am I doing wrong?

And were there command

2. Type: defaults delete com.microsoft.Outlook (to delete the old preferences).

3. Type: killall cfprefsd

fairly easy? I am afraid I may make this worse... At least I can still use word and excel, but no outlook 😟

Thanks a bunch. This seems to have fixed my problem. Outlook opened after update to14.5.0 but main window didn't. Applied the fix in Terminal and it just worked. Again my thanks. Very poor QC from MS, methinks.

Thanks for the advice - a Time Machine restore has fixed the problem.

I terminated the database daemon & sync services agent as the original update asked for them to be terminated so it seemed like a good idea, did a quick restore from Time Machine and rebooted - back in perfect working order.

hi Andy, I tried that and could find good instructions on how to delete an install from Time Machine. At your leisure if you had the time to lay out the steps I'd be in your debt. Thank you - Bill

Hello, I have deleted Office to trash and used Time Machine for a date before Wednesday. Before M/S on Friday advised me re the problem, M/S messed around with my database identity. So when I restored the folder from the time machine, I needed to rebuild my identity and then it came up with an error code [-18000] does anybody please know how best to resolve this? Is a full M/S Office uninstall/install the only way then to restore from the time machine, to overcome the 'identity' problem?

In Terminal, at the end of the same line with ~ ivana$, do not press enter yet. There should be a cursor (gray box), and there you want to start putting in the command defaults delete com.microsoft.Outlook.

Then, press enter, and type in the second command, and then press enter.

That should work for you.

Hi, brief confirmation - this helped. Remember to restore your "Microsoft Office 2011" to the Programs root -- and not below the office folder itself as it will do, if you have the folder selected as the recipient of the restore ;-). Thanks for the tip - it really helped and I was only down all of Saturday and Sunday...

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I have been so frustrated for the past few days and finally found this forum with everyone experiencing the same issue. This worked for me, which I found from a post here:

Closed Outlook

Opened Terminal, and typed following two commands:

defaults delete com.microsoft.Outlook

killall cfprefsd

Then I restarted Outlook and the main window appeared. There was a dialog box about adding an account or importing, but I just closed it because everything was right where it was supposed to be.

Thank goodness for this work-around. I thought I was completely stuffed. This solution worked for me and it looks like a permanent fix. Typical of Microsoft to release buggy software to the competitors...

Thanks a ton for this, tssr. I was panicking after I lost my reading pane. I'm not comfortable going into Terminal and typing in strings of code and what-not--but your fix was easy, simple, fast, and perfect. (I also switched off the Microsoft Autoupdate after this mess.)
