Office upgrade to 14.5.0 as of May 12, 2015

This new update to Office for Mac 2011 can be fatal. Once installed, I can no longer open an Outlook window for e-mail, contacts, etc.

After 3 hours on the phone with MicroSoft, they admitted that the update is flawed. Right now they have no fix.

I WOULD URGENTLY RECOMMEND TO NOT INSTALL MS OFFICE UPDATE VERSION 14.5.0.

Has anyone else experienced this and survived with their Outlook in tact?

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Yeah, another work around is :

1) delete your account Tools -> Accounts 2) restart your Mac 3) add your email account again.

This problem happens when you closing you outlook session (red "x" icon). I am guessing that MS is expecting you not to use Close but just minimize (yellow "-") your session. 😟

Wake up MICROSOFT and start testing your #$%@

Office (especially Outlook) commonly has problems with OS X updates, happens to many people with every update (not just this one) Don't hold your breath waiting.

Removing it correctly and reinstalling usually fixes it and you will be able to use the current version instead of an old one. It just takes a bit longer to do it right.

Thanks for the Terminal commands. These work, but only temporarily. if I want to view the Folders I created within (under) my Inbox Folder and click the triangle to do that, the problem recurs. So I have to repeat the Terminal commands. As others have said, Microsoft needs to provide a permanent solution. When I called them (and was on hold when I came across this thread) they gave me exactly the same commands, except that they said before opening Terminal and applying them, be sure to close all Microsoft programs, including Outlook.

The other change I tried did not recreate the problem immediately but now I am having the same issue. When Outlook reopened after the Terminal commands were applied, my messages were arranged by Conversation, but I prefer arrangement by Date Received. So I changed this setting in one of the menus.

I'm going to call Microsoft back to report this.

Just spoke with "Steve" from the mothership...Brenda Lee coming on strong...he says Microsoft will never, ever, ever fix Outlook in Microsoft Office 2011...in the future, Outlook 2016 for Mac will be released.

He was humming a Taylor Swift iTune, and I could see the white cords dangling from his ears.

I went back to the future and upgraded Outlook after a clean reinstall of Microsoft Office 2011.

I wanted to lick it.

Throw Time Machine in the hot tub and verify that you can boot from your both of your backup clones before attempting this.

Good morning mkubilius

I have never written on a community support page before, but I felt I really had to here so as to say thank you for the fix shown in your post concerning the 14.5 update and Outlook for mac 2011 loading but not showing. I'm the wrong side of fifty, starting a new business, and I use Outlook - your solution has been a life saver. Thank you very much.

Good Morning:

I found out that if you exit Outlook with Email folders displayed Under My Computer in Outlook, causes the problem of the inbox window not appearing the next time you try and open Outlook. I tested this by opening Outlook, opening the local email folders under my Computer and then exited Outlook. The next time I started Outlook the Inbox window did not appear. So I ran the fix steps below:

defaults delete com.microsoft.Outlook
killall cfprefsd

I then restarted Outlook and the Inbox window appeared after I selected continue. Next I opened the Email folders under my computer and then closed them. I exited Outlook and restarted it again and it work with no issues. My final test after restarting Outlook successfully was to again open the local email folders under my computer and then exited Outlook. Sure enough the next time I started Outlook the problem was back.

Until Microsoft gets their act together I would suggest that you close any open email folders before exiting Outlook.

Please let me know if this helps.

Hello everyone! New to the Community.

Thanks for the temporary fix of killing preferences after upgrading to 14.5 on my MacBookPro with Office 11. Running the Terminal and hitting the following commands has helped a lot.

defaults delete com.microsoft.Outlook

killall cfprefsd

Also not expanding the Folders on the Navigation pane before closing Outlook seems to avoid having to kill the preferences every time.

As far as I understood, Microsoft is working on a fix, but it seems they may not release it so soon. Is that correct?

If so, maybe the best way would be re-install Office 2011 for Mac from scratch but getting up to the previous update. Since I don't have Time Machine, and I am "kind-of" new to Mac, is it possible to get a step-by-step clean up and re-install process of my Office for Mac 2011? How can we avoid loosing all messages, rules, contacts, account settings, signatures, etc when making a full clean up? I am a little confused and afraid of doing that without the Time Machine...

Thanks a lot in advance for your tips...

Thanks; I also found that un-expanding before exiting Outlook (after applying the Terminal fix) helped. I won't hold my breath awaiting the Microsoft fix but maybe with enough complaints they will get tired of answering calls and fix it this time. I also contacted Apple a few times to let them know of the problem and updates on the solutions (none of the staff I talked with knew about it) and fix (and this thread) so they won't have to waste their support staff's time on trying to troubleshoot. Thanks to everyone on this thread for the solutions and for taking the time to help others by posting them.

If anyone knows of simple ways to transition (with tons of messages in folders and a few contacts) to Mac Mail, I would appreciate tips. All the online info suggests that this is difficult and imperfect to do. Otherwise I would have switched a long time ago.

It appears that the problem is rooted in the SyncServicesAgent. The SyncServicesAgent hangs on startup preventing the Outlook window from appearing.

For those using, multiple IMAP accounts, the problem resolves itself when removing the accounts as Outlook isn't forced to perform a Send/Receive and sync IMAP folders at startup. As POP and Exchange use different transport mechanism, it appears that Outlook starts up as expected although I suspect that those syncing with mobile devices via iTunes may discover that Contacts/Calendars/Notes are no longer being synchronized.

For those using Outlook & iTunes to sync mobile devices (i.e. not iCloud, MobileMe, etc.), navigating to the Outlook > Tools > Sync Services menu will display a window that:

a) is blank, no services present, or

b) services present but Calendar, Contacts will not sync to the device and Notes is not an option under iTunes > Device > Info

Understanding that the current "workaround" allows access to Outlook, it is temporary and not an acceptable solution. As per previous posters, it is likely that Microsoft will need to regression test the code from the last update against the current OS X (10.10.3) updates and release a fix.

Cheers,
