I have a HP LaserJet Pro 400 m401dw printer and a MacBook Air.
I have always been able to print word documents double sided if I chose to. However the ability to do this via printer settings etc has disappeared. This problem seems to have occurred (but I cannot be sure) since a HP printer software update on May 9.
Is this an Apple or HP issue? Mysteriously I can still double side print from my iPad.

Applications generally control where the various printer settings go but sometimes the driver software influences it. Have you clicked on the popup menu (probably labeled layout) to see if double-sided is hidden in one of the other sheets? My other thought is to go to HP’s Web site and see if the print driver software is there. I had a problem with a Canon printer similar to yours, an automatic update screwed things up. I had to download the driver from Canon’s Web site (same driver version) and reinstall it.
Thanks dwb. I have checked pop ups - no sign of the double sided tick box there. Also reinstalled driver from HP web site. And still, alas, not working in Word. But if I save the document as a PDF I can print double sided! Isn't that a mystery? It's as if the print controller in Word won't allow double sided printing, whereas a few days ago it did. I'm quite sure I'm not missing a box to tick for double side. Cheers.
Word’s print dialog is non-standard (surprise!) and when I got my first duplex printer it took me forever to find the option for Word - and more than once I lost it again. In the printer dialog it defaults to Copies & Pages. Click on that and select Layout. You should see double sided printing in the bottom right. Instead of a checkmark it is another popup menu. It defaults to Off. Check to see if yours shows the same.

What remains a mystery is that there used to be an easy tick box but that's disappeared recently - or maybe I'm making a mistake and it was never there. I don't think so, but who knows!
