Mac pro early 2008 under Yosemite 10.10.3 keeps freezing

Hello,

my great Mac pro early 2008 running Yosemite 10.10.3 with 18 Gb keeps freezing after a certain amount of time which could be hours or days.

The screen gets black and the monitor is not getting any video signal. The mouse and keyboard are inactive.

After a couple of minutes, the computer's noise is getting lower like it was going to sleep.

I can still ping the machine from another computer and using VNC viewer, I have managed once (but only once) to see a copy of the Mac pro window and it was frozen (I could even see the mouse pointer).

The only way to fix the problem is to restart the computer via the stat button.

This problem starts before I installed Yosemite with Safari freezing the Mac pro (but no black screen) but now I cannot blame Safari only as I could experience the problem even if Safari is not running.

Please help as I cannot safely use my computer anymore.

Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), Mac Pro early 2008

FBDIMMs - might need to buy replacements, ebay and Amazon

your gpu is OEM or something newer?

Every time that you do a hard forced restart, you should repair the drive AND do a Safe Boot afterwards.

I would troubleshoot by doing a clean install on fully erased hdd (or SSD but then just simple erase) and go from there - fresh installs, no extras.

And of course whatever else hardware is installed or connected.

No way for anyone to know without a full inventory - hardware AND software. Etrecheck is one simple way. But I would still start clean, and of course do SMC and NVRAM Reset - both.

Thank you Illaas for being so quick.

I upgraded the memory from the original 2 Gb to 18 Gb with compatible memories from Crucial and had no problems for months before I installed Mavericks (got Safari freezes) but the problem is worse with Yosemite.

The graphic card is the original one, i.e: ATI Radeon HD 2600

Did a lot of check: Safe mode; removed all unnecessary hardware; the non original memories; nvram reset; ...

what is SMC?

Thanks

May 13, 2015 2:46 PM in response to LaPommeDAdam

A 2600 is almost not even supported with Yosemite to handle the OS GUI

FBDIMMs go bad, and the higher the temp they run at the more likely.

I'm not a fan of these "upgrades" and prefer to see a clean install on new drive (or clone the drive first) and start fresh, and zero out drives.

Lots of issues with Safari and extensions, and another reason to not upgrade in place.

The original memory is more likely to fail, also mixing different batches and brands (though that usually happens early on).

System Management Control

And the 2008's' have funky / flakey SMC as well as EFI firmware code dealing with power management.

Crucial is okay, over-priced, I use to swear by them, now I can reverse that. And 667MHz are cheap and plentiful.

Lot of choices in GPU, if you use Adobe then GTX, hen AMD(s) along with latest OS if you use FCP-X (two ATI like even 5770 do wonders, but NOT FCP 7)

May 14, 2015 5:46 AM in response to LaPommeDAdam

I would never wait on a clean install as it serves two purposes: to create a new system restore image that is clean and untouched; to place on a small "system maintenance and emergency boot drive" and so you can begin to troubleshoot: Step #1: rule out software as a contributing factor.

That has served me well for well over my time using Macs and testing 25+ years.

May 18, 2015 4:02 AM in response to LaPommeDAdam

:-(

Experienced the first "freeze" after the clean install.

Very strange. When the "freeze" occurs, it is like the Mac wants to go in sleep mode because I hear the same noises from the disks/fan going away as when I put myself my computer in sleep mode. After few seconds, I can wake-up the computer by pressing the enter key or moving the mouse. I clearly hear disk/fan activity but screen is totally black and my monitor "sees" the wakeup request because its activity led went from orange (sleep) to blue. After a few seconds, I got the "no DVI signal" and the monitor goes back to sleep. The only way to get the computer back is to restart it.

Sounds like the computer is not generating the proper DVI signal?

Any help is welcome.

Hi

I'm running MP 3.1 (early 2008, 8 cores/32gig RAM) with yosemite 10.4 without any probs. Before you blame any kind of software always check if the 2 main enemies of all micro electronic stuff are under control: dirt + heat. Th first app I bought after installing the MP was Temperature Gauge 4.1. It's a good investment. you always see temp and RPM.

Long story short: check the fans, clean them, open the case, remove dirt and dust. If everything is clean and the probs persist, go the software way.

I have the same machine and the same problem, the only difference being that I have 8gb ram. After upgrading to Yosemite, I get crashes as frequently as in about 10-15 minutes after booting up. I've also experienced the sound continuing with black screen and keyboard/mouse unresponsive. dusty machine or any hardware problem shouldn't definitely be an issue as I use the computer daily and I never experienced anything like this before installing yosemite a few days ago.

May 20, 2015 9:53 PM in response to questdj

Hi

if you can rule out dust/heat probs you should read the hcl (hardware compatibility list) for Yosemite. Run "permission repair" first to rule out some kinds of upgrade issues, then look for differences Maverick <->Yosemite. I think 8gb RAM should be fine. Graphics card? Is it the original ATI card which came with the MAC or did you upgrade the card? Anyway check if your card is fully supported by Yosemite. I'm running Yosemite from the first public beta and did every update (now 10.10.4). No problems. But I admit I upgraded the graphics card in Maverick times (flashed HD 5770, runs fine under Yosemite) and again yesterday (flashed NVidia gtx680). Well I'm working a lot with logic pro/final cut and enjoy more powerful and snappy graphics card. So, please read the HCL first.

Hi Questdj,

sorry to read that you are experiencing the same problem. I don't feel lonely now.

Two days ago, I have cleaned the interior of my Mac Pro and moved the graphic card to another slot to have more space around it. I am also running the Mac with the cover opened.

So far (2 days: 8 hours of use with maybe 4/5 shutdowns/reboot), no freeze but I cannot yet claim victory as sometimes, I had the freeze after one or two days.

If the freeze occurs again, I will definitively look into upgrading my original graphic card (ATI Radeon HD 2600).

Thanks to all in this thread.
