Mac pro early 2008 under Yosemite 10.10.3 keeps freezing

Hello,

my great Mac pro early 2008 running Yosemite 10.10.3 with 18 Gb keeps freezing after a certain amount of time which could be hours or days.

The screen gets black and the monitor is not getting any video signal. The mouse and keyboard are inactive.

After a couple of minutes, the computer's noise is getting lower like it was going to sleep.

I can still ping the machine from another computer and using VNC viewer, I have managed once (but only once) to see a copy of the Mac pro window and it was frozen (I could even see the mouse pointer).

The only way to fix the problem is to restart the computer via the stat button.

This problem starts before I installed Yosemite with Safari freezing the Mac pro (but no black screen) but now I cannot blame Safari only as I could experience the problem even if Safari is not running.

Please help as I cannot safely use my computer anymore.

Dear all,

looks like I can close the case.

Since I have moved the graphic card to another slot and running without the cover, I didn't experience anymore the "freeze" which forced me to reboot.

Only once, I did experience something similar (using Safari) where the screen was still showing but I couldn't interact with the computer. Only this time, the Mac was able to recover by itself after something like 10 mns. The screen was partially distorted but after a while, everything went Ok.

Thank you all for helping and good luck.
