Nationwide.co.uk and Safari

Hello,

Has anyone managed to run the latest version of safari and be able to use Nationwide.co.uk internet banking? I have JAVA 1.4.2 and the Java 5.0 update 2 installed, but it will not even open the logon page for me within the internet banking website?

The building society have pointed me to their system requirements which say simply say Netscape, Mozilla, Safari, or Firefox with java installed. And they believe their systems to be running fine and compatible with Mac

I have tried Mozilla (current) and Firefox 1.5 with no joy (just sits there after I've clicked the login button on their frontpage). Is there a special update/patch that's required?

TIA

I just managed to get that login page to load OK, although the whole site is a bit slow; but UK sites often are.

It would seem from the initial look that something in my settings is OK, and something in yours is not. As a point, I tried first on the University network and this end stopped me going further with some security stuff -- as I say at this end.

When I switched to a less limited network I clicked on that Sign In button and it worked.

Two possibilities: your settings; your IP settings.

I am going home now where I can try on another network.

Hi

if i go to http://www.nationwide.co.uk/default.htm
& click the "internet banking - sign on' link then I get a log-in screen

I can enter some spurious info there & the page seems to work & give a 'wrong info : try again' page.

all this with 10.4.8 & safari 2.0.4 - so yes, it seems to work for me.

Some sites require Safari cookie prefs to be set to "always" - From the main Safari menu choose 'preferences', then the "security tab" & try setting "accept cookies" to "Always".

Hello Graham and Andy,

Thanks for your suggestions. I have finally managed to try them but I was partially successful. In the end, I managed to Login to the nationwide.co.uk internet banking site, but I only had limited functionality in the sense that the 'Transfers and Payments' section would not work at all.

I have read in the past that it could be to do with the Java version installed, so I updated it to JAVA 5.0 update 4 (downloaded from Apple.com) which updated fine. Still, no joy with transfers and the pages seemed to load very slowly (I mean kind of like 56k modem days).

At work, on an WinXP PC, I managed to login and do all that I needed to do, inc. transfers and paying bills? Have I missed something on the Mac? I even tried different browsers on the Mac (Safari, Mozilla, Camino, and Seamonkey). HSBC online bank worked a dream...

My broadband at home is 1Mbit ADSL.

TIA.

I am obviously not going to be able to get into that, but I think there is half a clue in something you wrote at the end:

Looking at the page source, it all seems to me a little poor with its all-capital coding which is not www compliant: but that's just me. I also don't like the use of frames. Compare the source with the Nationwide front page (or Apple's page) which is much nicer.

I suspect that the frame that loads may well be written in something that demands IE. As you say, it loads fine at work with PCs.

You might try something like Tinker Tool to install the Safari debug menu and with that spoof IE.

Alternatively, in the Terminal type

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1

(0 turns it off again)

bills? Have I missed something on the Mac? I even

Or has Nationwide missed something on Windows? If you contact them, they will probably tell you that IE is the preferred browser owing to security concerns, which will indicate a certain amount of (at best) bluff.

Hi Guys,

Just thought I'd pipe up here.

I've been using internet banking with the Nationwide since pre-Safari days and I've never had any issues. Their site has always worked with every version of Safari.

I've always had the "Debug" menu enabled, though. Also, I accept cookies only from sites I navigate to and my user agent is automatically chosen.

Hope this helps.

Hello All,

Finally had another chance to try accessing and using the nationwide.co.uk Internet Banking, however, I followed all of your suggestions/tips and had safari in Debug mode but the Transfers and Payments would still hang.

An interesting thing with all this testing is that I found that my XP PRO PC at work did not have any versions of Sun JAVA installed?! How bizarre when they have JAVA compatible browser as a system requirement on nationwide.co.uk.

Anyway, I went to the branch and spoke to them and they believe it could be to do with my router at home and its age! It is just over 1 year old.

Well, I am in the middle of migrating ISPs and will be getting a new wireless Netgear router as part of the package. I will have to wait and see or maybe change bank! 🙂

Many thanks guys!

I am also having problems with the Nationwide site with Safari after the latest security update. I have been using Nationwide for years now with no problems but now once I have logged on, the top two lines of each web page are missing which means I cannot logout from the site when I've finished. These lines contain the logout link plus some others.
Everything works fine with FireFox so I guess I'll stick with that for the time being.
I tried resetting Safari which made no difference. I used the Debug menu to set the User Agent to Mac MSIE and this worked once, i.e. I was able to see the links at the top of the page and logout. The next time I logged on to the site the links were gone again even though the User Agent was still setup as Mac MSIE.
