How do I remove highlighting from text

Using Pages 5.5.2 in Yosemite on MacBook Air, I can't figure out how to delete color highlighting on a document that was saved in Word. Since I can't remove it, I don't know whether it's text with a background color or highlighting, but I can't get rid of it. Please help! Thanks.

Why not go back into the original Pages v5.5.2 document. When you pass your pointer over that highlight, and a comment box pops open, you have your answer… it is a comment, and not a character fill color, which is the legitimate highlight color that all other word processors name it.

If there is a pop-up comment box, click delete in it. That will take the comment color off your selected text. Now, replace with a proper highlight by clicking the gear icon in the bold, italic, and underline button row of your Format Text panel. You want character fill color, either by clicking in the inkwell, or if you have a custom color in mind, the color globe icon. Word will understand these applied colors as traditional highlight colors.

Thanks VERY MUCH for answering. I found out that it IS a character fill and I can remove it using the Inspector (Inspector/Format>Style>Font>Gear button>Character Fill). I have so much trouble figuring out the new places where familiar commands go when software is updated! What a relief--your answer stimulated me to keep looking until I found it. I really appreciate your taking the time to answer.
