new entries revert to "new event"

Just within the last few days, Calendar has begun consistently misbehaving. I create a new event, assign it to a calendar, fill in information such as time and notes. I close the editing window, the new title displays (I'm using Month View) for just a second, and then it reverts to "New Event," and everything I've entered is lost. Oddly, when I enter all the information a second time, it always seems to stay.

As far as I know, I haven't made any changes to my OS (10.9.5) or to Calendar (7.0), neither via their settings nor any other way. FYI, I'm using iCloud to sync between the calendars on my MBPro and my iPhone (4S, running 7.1.2).

Hi George,

I was struggling with this bug for almost a year now, always entering the data for a new event twice. Unfortunately, I must have forgotten to do this numerous times and ditto consequences… Now, I was really getting annoyed and looked on the web. For such a persistent bug, it was rather heard to find related topics. Until I hit this thread. So many replies with same issue but no cure.

So I tried your solution Preferences > Advanced, and deselect "Turn on time zone support."… and it worked!! Mysteriously!

Although this error happens as I remember me at 100% of all entries, I tried a second test with exact same entries as a previous failed one… Bummer! The same 'revert to first version' of the new event occurred. Only the title was kept but all subsequent changes made were ignored after closing the edit.

I will have to continue my search through this thread I suppose.

Apple, why do you just leave us again in the cold? My addiction for more than 20 years now to their products is becoming less and less harder to overcome...

Meanwhile, I did some testing on iCal iMac (10.7.5 but apparently everybody else up to El Capitan is left with this bug) by double clicking in a given day > enter title of the event > double clicking the event > edited for all tests the same values like recurrence and 'message with sound'

- NO PROBLEM when entering a new event WITHOUT CHANGING the DEFAULT CALENDAR; tested several times; even if default calendar is SAME or DIFFERENT from the one on iCloud or other iOS devices

- FAILED when creating a new IDENTICAL EVENT BUT CHANGED to a NON-DEFAULT CALENDAR; this failed on each test! Also with or without prior synching iCal, Time Zone support turned on, etc.

- changing the default calendar in iCloud did NOT changed these results; on each occasion where a new event was changed to a non-default calendar, the fault occurs

Remark:

After entering or editing an event, one can remark on top of the screen (iCal 5.0.3) next to the '+'-button the indication 'Updating...' (or something similar; I use the Dutch version where it states 'bijwerken…' MOMENTARILY appearing TWICE. When you try to quickly REOPEN AND BEFORE this 'UPDATING' appears, a 'virgin' event which was edited a first time (switching to a non-default calendar to induce the fault - reversion to previous values of the virgin event), one can see in the event-edit-window MOMENTARILY the CORRECT VALUES reverting to the faulty 'virgin' values. As already expected, the fault (bug) lies in the synching process.

Does anyone know if there is a way to turn off "auto update" or auto synch with icloud and just refresh/update the calendar manually ?

I've been working with this theory for a while and now I am more convinced. I think part of the malfunction is that when an event is entered the calendar tries to synch with icloud so quickly that the synch happens before the data that is put in the event is even saved. I was recently working offline for quite a while and entered a ton of events. The calendar would try to update immediately and give me an error message before I had even finished entering an event- very annoying. Of course the error message was indicating that the calendar "could not connect with the server" because I was offline. I was waiting to see if my events would disappear once I got back online again.

The positive outcome is that every single event I entered was saved in the calendar and synched later when I was back online. I cannot close this comment without griping once again that all of us users seem to be working much harder on a solution than apple is. None of the upgrades since Yosemite have fixed this bug.

if anyone knows if the auto-update function can be turned off, I would appreciate knowing about it.

Thank you !!!

I have had the same issues, and started wondering why I wasn't being notified! Yesterday I had doctors appointment that it failed to notify me. After reading your posting and the part that said " Oddly, when I enter all the information a second time, it always seems to stay." I did some testing with creating a new event and noticed at the bottom of the pop-up there are two buttons, the one on the left says show, and the one on the right says delete. When you re-enter the information at the bottom you have 3 buttons. From left to right are Show, Revert, Apply. Once hit select Apply it properly saves it. So this may be the workaround if you don't want to upgrade to Yosemite. It seems to be working for me by doing the extra step.

At one time it was the little things that made the Macintosh great, anymore it's the little things that don't work that starting to make me frustrated. Been on Macs since 1984!

If you hear anything useful from Apple I would very much appreciate if you post it. They are still the only party that hasn't weighed in.

The rest of this post may not be of value to anyone since I am basically editorializing out of frustration ! Many OS's ago I was perfectly happy syncing my contacts and calendar to my computer through itunes. Then Apple basically forced everyone to use their cloud in order to sync. After researching other calendar sync systems, I begrudgingly went to icloud, who's security I still don't trust. But at least for a little while the calendar actually worked. Now it's untrustworthy on a basic functional level.

There used to be a time where apple users were happy to pay more for their products because they functioned so well and as a result boosted productivity and creativity. Now that apple is more interested in creating a monopoly of sorts, they seem to spend more energy writing programs that force or trap you into using their products versus making those products more functional and more reliable than their competitors. Foolish and frustrating direction to take.

Oddly, refreshing calendars has never worked for me.

It's mind-boggling to me that this remains an issue. How can Apple not prioritize addressing a bug that make us unable to enter a simple calendar event in one go? This is the most basic requirement of calendar software.

Apple, please pay attention and take action! I've spammed and been spammed with multiple calendar change alerts; lost updates to events before I realized this was happening; and had surprises spoiled when an event reverted to a shared calendar from a private one. That last item was merely sad. Imagine if it had also been something confidential for more important reasons.

Someone in another thread suggested this, and so far it seems to work:

Go to Calendar and open Preferences then General tab (default one).

at the bottom part where it says 'Default Calendar' just change it from whatever it is to 'Selected Calendar'. this will basically means that any new event you open will automatically be chosen to be the same as the last one you did. However, by doing so, you can now change modify edit or do whatever you want and it'll be saved properly!

Hope this helps! 🙂

Hi,

just tried this one out… No luck: created an event 'Test' (default calendar = same as last one used) > then edited event: changed calendar to another one as desired + changed some other data such as time, reminders,… > saved it >>> for a second or two the edited event is displayed correctly (start time is discretely shown next to the event title) but then during the sync (which can be remarked on top of the calendar window) the 'start time' is removed > double clicking on the event to show the details > all except the changed 'calendar' is retained >>> repeated editing time, reminders but WITHOUT changing the calendar (as it was changed to the desired one) > saved it > ALL OK

So, each time when an event is edited including a change of calendar, all data except this desired calendar is ignored at subsequent sync.

You can test it repeating the above and then try a 2nd edit of the event BUT this time change again the calendar the another one > again, all data except the new calendar is ignored.

So what I do on iCal for OS X is working in 2 steps if I want to change the default calendar:

1. change the calendar to the desired one > then save ('Ready')

2. change all other data as desired (no change of calendar) > then save

Anyway, this much too long lasting (thank you Apple) misbehavior is of course absolutely unacceptable as it could lead to loss of important RV's, etc.

This is the only way creating events works for me. All other suggestions/fixes revert back to, new event but I appreciate all suggestions. And alerts are still iffy. I've had them sometimes not activate. Or activate and disappear briefly before my ever having clicked to close them. Repeating alerts are also thing of the past. My organizational skills are not the best but without my 7 calendars and alerts they've become much worse.😟

Did you hear any response from Apple hueyo? I remember this issue has been raised almost a year ago and it's still buggy. Unbelievable! Someone said earlier Apple won't fix this problem on old OS... So I upgraded OS all the way to El Capitan 10.11.3 and tested the calendar on each OS if makes any different. Unfortunately the Calendar is still not right. It is a little different problem than old OS tho. When you create new events and enter all your details and choose non-default calendar, it stays. But if you want to edit details on existing calendar (ie: time, note including change calendar) it bounces back to the original calendar you had. If you edit other details without changing calendar it works. Does Apple even read this forum???
